The City of Sault Ste. Marie has declared a Significant Weather Event following a Special Weather Statement issued by Environment Canada. Snow squall conditions are forecast to develop this evening and continue through Tuesday morning, with total snowfall accumulations of 15 to 30 centimetres possible. Periods of heavy snow, combined with local blowing snow, may result in significantly reduced visibility. Wind gusts reaching up to 50 km/h are also expected, further contributing to hazardous travel conditions.
A Significant Weather Event does not mean roads are closed or that service levels are reduced. An event is declared when conditions, such as heavy snowfall, make it difficult for crews to restore roads to optimal condition. When a significant weather event is declared, all city-maintained roads and sidewalks are in a “state of repair”.
The winter parking by-law remains in effect with no parking on City streets between midnight and 6 a.m. Transit customers may experience some delays.
