It didn’t end with a scandal. It ended quietly — after midnight.

At the turn of 2026, MTV switched off most of its 24-hour music channels across multiple countries. No countdown. No farewell show. In some regions, the last thing that played was “Video Killed the Radio Star” — the same song that opened MTV in 1981.

For 45 years, MTV didn’t just air music. It decided music. It taught a generation how to dress, what to listen to, who mattered. Artists weren’t discovered — they were anointed. If your video landed on heavy rotation, your life changed.

But slowly, the screen stopped being about music. Reality shows took over. Then streaming took over everything else. Music never left — it just stopped needing MTV.

The brand still exists. The main channel still runs. But the idea of MTV as a place where music lived all day, every day — that era is over. Sometimes culture doesn’t crash. It fades — when it’s no longer needed.
