Harmony Hardwood Stairs

Harmony Hardwood Stairs You want old-school craftsmanship and the time taken to do it right? Harmony does this on every job. It’s an important focal point of your décor.

From Harmony Hardwood:

Your staircase is often the first thing guests see when they enter your home. You want it to be a striking introduction and a statement of your style. Not everyone has a clear vision of the style they want to create. I find a lot of our clients are surprised by the many staircase options that are available in today’s marketplace. It’s our job to collaborate with clients and

guide them through the process of choice and selection. At Harmony, we start by listening; exploring a client’s tastes and design inspiration to create a shared picture of their style. We use visual guides including home décor magazines, our photo catalogue of previous work and physical samples to guide us throughout a project. I have found that the best work emerges when a clear aesthetic vision of the whole project guides all the choices that go into its development. This shared vision guides the attention to detail and translates into a finished product that’s “in harmony” with the initial vision. To me, this is the difference between a tradesman and an artisan. This is my approach to life and to every staircase. This vision of the aesthetic whole combined with a focus on physical details is what maintains Harmony’s high standards. Paul Mawdsley, Owner

One more day of finishing touches and these stairs will be ready for their photo shoot. I already have another client who likes the previous pic so much that she's requested the same spindles.

Here is a sneak preview of the project I am currently working on. I have had a few clients look at this style, but this is the first time someone has chosen it. I think it looks very sharp and could become a top request over the next couple of years. Let me know what you think.

Whitby After & Before 2405
A step on the dark side! This one is a little diferent from the norm, choosing black accents where most choose white. It's very striking! The client was quite adventurous, willing to paint it out white if they decided it wasn't a fit for them. They hand painted the spindles black themselves. I've had a couple of designers respond quite positively. I like it myself. Curious what you think?

Pickering After & Before 2405
Experiment in vinyl.
At first glance, this may look like a wooden staircase but I was asked to create this look using vinyl flooring. After some experiments in my workshop (see pics close to the end), I decided this would be very doable. It turned out to be a lot of work but I was satisfied with the results. Personally, I would rather see solid hardwood stairs but there are some situations where this just might be the better choice. Happy client!

North York After & Before 2408
Sometimes it's all about the rails AND sometimes less is more.
Here the client moved into their new home with railings that broke today's building code in 3 different ways. It was too short, too climbable, and had gaps that made them unsafe for the little ones. Not to mention, based on what they chose to replace it, it was a little too curly.

A big concern here was getting black stain on white carpet. I was able to take precise measurements to precut and assemble the railing components and do all the staining and finishing in my workshop before installation. No chance of a stain mishap. Another happy client!

Port Perry Cottage After & Before 2403
(More than just hardwood stairs)
It's not often that I work in a cottage setting with softwood but these pine steps needed a facelift. Yes, pine steps can look beautiful again! In fact, the surrounding window frames were sunbleached and a couple of doors had dog scratches. All were easily fixed with a little sanding, staining and finishing.

Brooklin Before & After 2408
Fresh look with new modern posts and simple iron spindles with just a little detail. Very tasteful design!

A distinctive design element here is the trim used around the flooring and on the stringers. I'll have to show more pics of the trim on a future post.

Stair Crack Repair:
Earlier this year I did a post entitled, "Big crack in the middle of the step! Can this be fixed?" This is the follow-up post, showing the process used to mend the step.

Also, pulling the treads off, reinforcing the structure, and refastening them with a strong rubberized glue (as seen in these pics) will eliminate all or most of the squeaks on your staircase.

Before and After in Whitby 2412
This one was a refinish of existing treads and rails with new posts and spindles, and with the stringers and risers painted white. The bottom bullnose was reconfigured and changed out for a more contemporary square bullnose step. The existing rail was reconfigured to make a 90-degree turn into the bottom post.

An added challenge was that the upper hall flooring was not being changed but the new spindles needed to be closer together to meet code. I installed an oak plinth and stained it to match the flooring. This allowed for new spindle holes to be made.

Big crack in the middle of the step! Can this be fixed? Yes, it can.
