Epsilon Mechanical – Service Tech Storytime 🔧🔥

Some of the toughest HVAC calls aren’t the obvious ones. No snapped igniter. No seized inducer. Just an issue that comes and goes… the worst kind.

In this case, the furnace looked perfect on paper. No error codes. Everything operating normally. But the house wasn’t heating consistently.

So I did what good service techs do — I waited.
Over 40 minutes of watching everything: inducer, gas valve, pressure switch, burners, supply temp, condensate pump… all of it 👀

Then it happened. The furnace shut down.
No call for heat. No signal from the thermostat to the heating terminal on the control board.

Bingo 🎯
Bad thermostat — the heating relay was intermittently opening during operation.

Lesson of the day:
A great service tech isn’t rushed or reactive.
They’re patient, calm, and observant — arguably the three most important traits in this trade.

🔥 No heat call turned into a save 🔧
We showed up right after install and were told it was “just a dirty filter.” Customer wanted a proper once-over — good call.

During high fire we caught a stuttering gas valve, pressure switch clicking, and water sloshing in the exhaust. Turns out the exhaust wasn’t sloped correctly, trapping condensation in a 90° bend and causing back pressure.

We corrected the venting, adjusted gas pressure, and fixed what should’ve been done during install. Furnace now running smooth — no callbacks.

⚠️ This is why maintenance matters. ⚠️

We were called out to inspect a York rooftop unit and the carbon monoxide levels were through the roof. The heat exchanger was compromised—and to replace it, the unit had to be almost completely torn down.

⏱️ About 4 hours of tough, tight-access work
❄️ Done in the middle of winter
