Designing, drafting, fabricating, and constructing 23' model steel bridges since 1999.

For the past eighteen years, the UBC Steel Bridge Design Team has internationally represented the University of British Columbia at the National Student Steel Bridge Competition (NSSBC) in the US. This competition challenges university students to design and fabricate a scaled bridge made primarily of steel, with different rules and design constraints every year. The American Society of Civil Engi

neers (ASCE) and the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) hosts this competition annually.

🎉Top Canadian Team & 12th Place Overall Scoring🎉

A few days ago, UBC Steel Bridge competed at the SSBC Nationals, where we ranked 12th out of 43 teams—earning the title of top Canadian team once again! We placed 10th in Economy, 13th in Efficiency, 6th in Lightness, and proudly took 3rd in the Video category.

We’re incredibly proud of everything we’ve accomplished this year. A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us along the way. To our sponsors—your financial contributions and fabrication assistance were instrumental in helping us succeed at competition, and we’re deeply grateful.

To all our team members, thank you for your tireless work, commitment, and enthusiasm. Every achievement this year is a reflection of your collective effort, and none of it would have been possible without you.

🏅1st Place Overall Canadian Team in Performance
🎗 4th Place Overall Scoring

This past weekend, our team attended the Canadian National Steel Bridge Competition, hosted by the University of Manitoba. With the hard work and efforts of our team members, we participated and placed in each aspect of the competition, not just in the technical aspects, but also the categories of presentation, elevator pitch, and video.

Having made improvements to the bridge and through construction practices, we were immensely proud to see a 20% decrease in our overall performance cost compared to SSBC Regionals, leading to one of the best scoring in the history of our team!

Say hello to our Design and Analysis (DNA) subteam! They handle everything from conceptual to detailed design of the bridge’s truss system, using professional tools like S-Frame to carry out a full analysis and design process.

Meet our Drafting Subteam! They use Inventor and AutoCAD to create 3D models of bridge components and produce engineering drawings. After putting in a ton of hard work, they completed the Fabrication Package and had some fun competing in the Battle of the Drafters.

🎉FIRST PLACE @ SSBC REGIONALS!!!🎉

Over the past weekend, UBC Steel Bridge competed in the 2025 ASCE Pacific Northwest Symposium hosted by Portland State University and the University of Portland. A year’s worth of dedication, hardship, and innovation propelled UBC Steel Bridge to achieve a historical first place finish at the regional competition, earning our ticket to the national competition at Iowa State University.
