LandshifterZ - Invivo Design Trees

LandshifterZ - Invivo Design Trees LandShifterZ Design Trees (formerly: Invivo) creates products that are made of living trees. TreeNovation is inexpensive. TreeNovation requires less maintenance.

Modern design styles combined with advanced horticultural techniques produce elegant products that have a positive effect on the environment. TreeNovations has developed, and patented, a set of horticultural techniques to grow soft, flexible and shapeless (un-lignified ) trees. These trees are shaped by placing them on temporary templates (jigs) and induced to harden and thicken – whilst retaining

the shape of the template on which they were placed. In effect, this allows the “casting” of living material into shapes that were formerly impossible to achieve. TreeNovation has accumulated experience in design and fabrication techniques for the temporary templates – this know-how enables TreeNovation to develop inexpensive and robust designs for its trees. TreeNovation is now focused on providing commercial applications and designs from living trees, based on its years of research. TreeNovation's technology enables outdoor functional structures in cities, parks and private gardens. Current human building techniques universally implement dead or artificial material, which has little or no interaction with its surroundings. In complete contradiction, modern ecological points of view focus on the interaction between organisms and their environment, human beings not being excepted from this rule. The Advantages of TreeNovation:

TreeNovation creations are good for the atmosphere. TreeNovation is easy to utilize in places that modern building techniques find difficult (forested areas, cliff faces, etc). Most of a TreeNovation structure’s mass comes from water and air. Living trees can take care of themselves. They react to
mechanical stress (strong winds, earth tremors) and heal themselves from injury (bruising and cracking). Evapotranspiration and shading are things that trees do naturally. Both of them contribute to cooling the air in the vicinity of a TreeNovations creation. air filtration. human well being and health. habitat reconstruction – using indigenous trees. lower embodied energy. carbon positive.

This poplar tree was grown and grafted over a 25 year period. The grafting process utilizes the trees natural ability to inosculate, or join together. After the tree died of natural causes, I dug it from the ground so it could stand on its own roots.
The tree was slowly dried and the bark removed. Tung oil was applied to the surface for protection and to slow the drying.
While the tree was living, it was “adopted” by Jezzy the iconic rapper as a symbol of his love for his then girlfriend Jeannie Mai who is now his wife.

The work is 102” tall, the root base is 80” x 66”. The root base can be made smaller if necessary.

Over the last 30 years I have grown many different species of trees into useful items and artistic shapes. The process requires an in-depth knowledge of tree cultivation, along with a compulsive diligence to detail during the growing seasons.
My trees are pruned, shaped and grafted while they grow thicker and taller every year. They are continually watered, weeded and protected from insects and wind damage while they grow.

Richard Reames has written two books on the subject of “Arborsculpture”
a word he coined with his first book in 1995 titled How to Grow a Chair
His second book Arborsculpture Solution for a Small Planet was printed in 2005 and covers the history of the art and the practitioners around the world.
Richard coordinated a World Expo pavilion in Japan in 2005 and has taught arborsculpture at the J.C. Campbell school of folk art.

A scheme of the Root Tower Laboratory named after Sarah Racine. A machine basement for pumps and filters, two stories of root chambers where you can get up close and personal with living roots - and a greenhouse on the roof! It may seem like a far fetched idea... but they built it!
