The importance of proper backfilling.
Backfilling (refilling the trench once the pipe is in) is something that looks straightforward but demands real precision.
First, the fill volume has to be exact. Too much dirt and you're left with mounds in your lawn. Too little, and even if the surface looks flat when the sod goes back down, rain and foot traffic will eventually cause sunken ruts.
That's why proper, heavy tamping is critical. This compacts the soil firmly back into the trench, until the ground is solid enough that standing on your heel leaves zero indentation. We also tamp along both sides of the trench to lock everything in place.
Then there's cleanup. Trenching pulls up rocks of all sizes, and every one of them needs to be carefully raked and removed before the lawn is back in use. A single buried rock becomes a lawnmower hazard fast.
And finally, something that separates a professional install from an amateur one, is how the sod is handled during the whole process. When removing, we lay each piece neatly alongside the trench in order so it goes back exactly the way it came out. Skip this step and you're left with patchy, mismatched turf that takes twice as long to recover.
