Safety first! We recently took some time between jobs to make a bunch of safety stations for our job sites. Before having these stations it was difficult to audit sites for required safety supplies. With these stations it is easy to see at a glance what is available and what needs replacing.
Having ppe and other safety supplies visible and in the same location at each of our job sites will increase the probability that our team will use them to work safe. When earplugs or safety glasses are in a bin buried in someone’s truck it is much less likely to be used than if they are in a convenient location. These are designed to be hung in our outhouses when the work is outside and then on our wire shelving when work turns inside.

Meet Josiah! Josiah started at Roost Custom Builders 10 years ago and in that has gone from no experience in construction to managing our largest projects. Josiah is detail oriented and conscientious in his work. He has a passion for building science and choral music. With an expansive glass wall facing the Assiniboine river this kitchen blurs the lines between inside and out. The countertops pull in the greens from the elms and the willows on the river bank while the forest scene on the pantry walls gives you a sense of place.

We were honoured when DeLayne (he/they) asked if they could sit down with us a share a bit of their experience of being q***r in the trades. His pitch to us was this: “One of the most important things q***r folk do for each other is show that there is hope. Safer spaces do exist.”

For one of our recent team building events we met up with Mandy of Prairie Cross Fit for an introduction to functional fitness.
It is a common misconception that if you have a physical job you don’t need to go to the gym. Physical Labour is often repetitive in nature which can lead to muscle imbalances that cause pain and discomfort.
In her into to functional fitness seminar we attended Mandy did a great job at explaining how the dynamic movements in function fitness training develop main muscle groups as well as smaller stabilizing muscles to create balance. This balance in turn reduces your risk of injury on site.
This was a great way for us to try something new and have some friendly competitions. Big thanks to Mandy and Prairie Cross Fit 10/10!

This is why details matter!
This was a single story addition onto a two story home. The plumbing stack flashing detail failed causing water infiltration and rot bad enough to cause structural failure. Everyone did their job, framer’s framed, plumbers vented their plumbing, roofer’s installed roofing, and eavestrough installers put in downspouts. The problem is in an age of specialization and small margins contractors are not incentivized to pay attention to how what they were hired to do will interact with what other’s are doing.
This is where it is essential to hire an experienced builder like Roost Custom Builders. Our highly conscientious team has the experience to manage projects in such a way to avoid these kinds of catastrophic failures. Sometimes we wonder if we are caring too much about the little things but seeing these kinds of consequences reminds us of what is at stake.
