In the past, plumbing fixtures did not have their own P-traps. To protect the building from sewer gases and foul odors entering from the municipal sewer system, a building trap was installed at the main sewer outlet. This trap acted as a barrier against harmful gases and smells.

Today, all modern fixtures are designed with their own P-traps, which makes the building trap unnecessary. In fact, having a building trap in place can create several issues, including:
• Frequent blockages and clogs in the sewer line
• Reduced flow capacity
• Difficulty in cleaning and maintenance

For these reasons, building traps are no longer recommended in modern plumbing codes. In older properties, it is strongly advised to remove or replace the building trap to ensure the sewer system operates efficiently, safely, and in compliance with current standards.
