Entries are being accepted for the fib Achievement Award for Young Engineers 2027! This prize is awarded in two categories, Research and Design & Construction, to engineers under the age of 40.

The award includes a €2’000 prize and an invitation to attend the fib Symposium 2027 in Dresden, where the selected winner in each category will present and discuss their work during a special session.

Join us for the fibCACRCS 2027 Conference (28-30 June 2027), to be held in the vibrant city of Barcelona, a Mediterranean city where reinforced concrete structures meet the sea, placing the conference theme at the heart of real engineering concerns.

This conference will provide a forum to foster innovation, consolidate current knowledge, and move toward consensus and standardization in the evaluation of corrosion-damaged structures.

Throughout the conference, participants will have the opportunity to share knowledge, present cutting-edge research, and engage in discussions on key topics such as corrosion damage assessment, structural performance, service life prediction, and rehabilitation techniques. Special sessions and round table discussions will further encourage critical reflection on current standards, emerging methodologies, and future research needs.

Communications are welcome on the following topics:

TG 1.7 “Construction of Concrete Structures” is developing new guidance on “Circularity, from a construction perspective,” and Commission 1 has requested that demolition be included within this scope, as the bridging link between two life cycles, from large structural elements to small components.

TG 1.7 does not currently have in-depth knowledge of demolition and is looking for experts within the fib community to support this work, with a focus on construction-related aspects.

This document provides state-of-the-art guidance on the functional requirements, design considerations and testing methods for fire protection systems for stay cables. It represents a collective effort to establish consistent performance criteria, building upon international experience, scientific knowledge, and lessons learned from real events.

Furthermore, it highlights the main causes of fire affecting cable-supported structures and introduces two fundamental types of qualification tests: the insulating system test and the high-temperature strength test. The former is particularly significant, as it determines the fire rating of the protection system and thus serves as the key benchmark for assessing its adequacy.

“Structural Concrete” journal short project note spotlight: The Martin

The Martin is a 16-storey, 50 m tall residential tower with 103 apartments above a two-storey car park. Its defining architectural feature is four interlocking cubic volumes that create cantilevers of up to 6 m — with the building cantilevering in two directions from the 8th floor upward, on top of a car park structure below. This short project note focuses on the structure’s relevant aspects, namely the design of the cantilevering deep wall-beams that carry the interlocking volumes, the stability system provided by the central “ #”-shaped core, the strut-and-tie mechanism used to resolve forces at the highest cantilever, the transfer of loads down to the parking basement, and the additional loading considerations introduced by the rooftop gardens.
