This year, the Task Group 4.7 (Structural Applications of Recycled Aggregate Concrete – Properties, Modeling, and Design) has successfully completed its planned work with the coordination of Nikola Tosic and a new fib bulletin is going to be published shortly.

fib COM4 has decided to extend the aims and scope and the TG4.7 by considering a wider range of aggregates, including “alternative” aggregates, for structural concrete applications: a new Convenor has been nominated (Marco Pepe) in June, and the activities are going to start soon. The TG is looking for people interested to join the group and, for this, the Convenor has launched a google form for defining the possible topic of interest for each member as well as possible slots for the kick-off meeting.

The fib Mentoring Programme brings members together across generations and borders to share experience and support career development.

We welcome both mentors and mentees, and matching takes place on a rolling basis.

The fib-CH Betontag brought together the Swiss concrete community for a day of presentations and exchange. Among the speakers, we were glad to welcome several members of the fib community.

fib Secretary General David Fernández-Ordóñez gave a presentation on fib.

fib member Dr. Philippe Ménetrey presented “ Réfection du Grand-Pont à Lausanne”.

Prof. Aurelio Muttoni, recipient of the fib Freyssinet Medal, and Dr. João Simões, convener of fib TG 2.2 “Ultimate limit state models,” presented “Mise en conformité du parking de la Riponne, Lausanne.”

Prof. Walter Kaufmann, recipient of the fib Medal of Merit, spoke on “Betonbau und Netto-Null: Widerspruch oder Chance?”, asking whether concrete construction and net zero can go together.

𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁, 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲?

A bridge is more than a connection between two places. It is part of the public realm, shaping how people experience and interact with their surroundings.

At fib Symposium 2027 in Dresden, Bart Halaczek, Director at Knight Architects, will explore this human-centered perspective in his keynote:

“Humans first, machines second – user experience as a driving factor in the design of our infrastructure”

With more than 20 years of experience at the intersection of architecture and civil engineering, Bart brings a multidisciplinary perspective to bridge design. He has led projects ranging from urban footbridges to motorway and rail crossings, including the Kienlesberg Bridge in Ulm, the Küstrin-Kietz Oder rail crossing, the Offenbachstraße Nord footbridge in Munich and the Drammen City Bridge in Norway.

His approach is grounded in a clear conviction: public acceptance begins by putting people at the center of the design process. Early collaboration across disciplines is essential to creating infrastructure that is not only functional, but also inclusive, sensitive to its cultural context and environmentally responsible.

His design philosophy? “Beautiful ordinary” timeless structures that combine simplicity and elegance.

📣 Call for Abstracts Extended — New Deadline: 31 October 2026

The abstract submission deadline for the 5th International fib Symposium on Conceptual Design of Concrete Structures has been extended to 31 October 2026.

We invite researchers, practising engineers and architects to share their research, projects and experiences across the symposium’s three main topics:

• Conceptual design for existing structures
• Conceptual design with new materials and advanced production techniques
• Conceptual design to satisfy multi-purpose social needs

Join us to exchange ideas and discuss how conceptual design can respond to the challenges facing our built environment.

Join us for the fib ICCS 2028, which will take place from 19 to 23 September 2028 in Seoul, South Korea.

The aim of the conference is to bring together engineers, researchers, academics, producers, investors and developers to exchange and discuss their innovative approaches and ideas focused on sustainable concrete structures and their contribution to sustainable development goals. The conference topics include design and assessment, advanced materials, modelling and analyses, durability, life cycle design, through-life management and care, resilience, dismantlement, reuse and recycling, innovation in buildings and civil structures, and case studies.

fib ICCS 2028 will be hosted by the Korea Concrete Institute, bringing together researchers, engineers, and professionals from around the world to advance the science, design, and application of sustainable concrete. Entries are open until 9 November 2026 in two categories: Research, and Design & Construction. The award includes a €2'000 prize and an invitation to the fib symposium in Dresden, Germany, in June 2027, where it will be presented during a special session.

𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘀.

What should we do when prestressed concrete bridges reach the end of their service life? Replace them — or find new ways to rehabilitate and extend their life?

At fib Symposium 2027 in Dresden, Prof. Emeritus Dr. Hiroshi Mutsuyoshi will explore this question in his keynote:

“Replacement or rehabilitation of deteriorated prestressed concrete bridges?”

Dr. Mutsuyoshi is Professor Emeritus at Saitama University, Japan. His research spans prestressed concrete bridges, earthquake engineering for reinforced concrete structures, new materials for concrete structures, and the rehabilitation of existing concrete structures.

With decades of expertise in concrete structures and infrastructure, he brings an international perspective to one of the key questions facing the future of our existing bridge stock.
