The first step in creating a Ghost finish is actually making it disappear.

Before any colour is applied, the frame receives its base layers, creating the foundation that will ultimately allow the Ghost effect to emerge. At this stage, there’s little indication of what the finished frame will become.

The magic comes later.

A Ghost isn’t a colour. It’s a process.

This is where the Ghost begins to reveal itself.

Layer upon layer of carefully controlled paint is applied by hand. Too much and the effect disappears. Too little and the colour never develops.

The goal is to create a finish that transforms with light—appearing almost transparent from one angle and rich with colour from another.

No two Ghosts are ever exactly alike.

A Ghost finish is designed to reward a second look.

In the shade, it can appear subtle and understated. Step into the sunlight and the frame comes alive, revealing depth, movement, and colour hidden beneath the surface.

It’s one of the most challenging paint processes we offer and one of the most captivating.

This is Silver Ghost.

Inside the Factory

In the back of the workshop, Giuseppe is laminating a new 56cm Aequus frame.

Lamination is where a frame truly begins to take shape. Sheet by sheet, individual pieces of carbon fiber are cut, positioned, aligned, and carefully laid into the mould by hand.

A single SWI frame represents dozens of hours of lamination work alone. Every piece must sit exactly where it was engineered to be. Every overlap, every transition, every layer contributes to how the bike will ultimately ride.

When you spend a few moments watching these craftsmen work it becomes clear that this is something else entirely. Carbon fiber is a remarkable material, but in the wrong hands it’s just fabric and resin. In the right hands, it becomes a machine capable of carrying someone over mountains, across continents, and through years of unforgettable rides.

We love it when customer and fans of SWI come visit the factory and see the process first hand. Everyone walks away with a new relationship to the bike.

100 hours.

That’s the minimum time required to handcraft a single SWI Aequus frame.

Clear coat finishes may appear simple, but they’re often the most demanding. There is nowhere to hide. Every carbon layer, every transition, and every detail of the herringbone layup must be executed with absolute precision. The weave has to be perfect because the frame itself becomes the artwork.

For many purists, a gloss clear coat Aequus is the ultimate expression of the bike. No paint. No distractions. Just the craftsmanship, engineering, and material on full display.

Just ask who is the one riding the SWI in the Pacific Northwest.

Unlike a traditional solid paint, the Ghost series changes character throughout the day.

In direct sunlight it delivers a bright metallic glow, while in softer light it becomes understated and elegant, exposing hints of the carbon architecture beneath.

The result is a finish that feels both modern and timeless, technical from a distance, handcrafted up close.

It’s all in the details.

A Ghost is built around subtlety. The transition from solid to transparent. The layers beneath the surface. The way light moves across the frame and reveals something different from every angle.

What looks simple is anything but. The process is incredibly difficult to execute and our team has spent countless hours refining and mastering it.

The result is a finish that feels alive, changing with every ride, every turn, every moment in the light.

Who knew that Tokyo is such a wicked city to ride a bike in? We went there to visit and hang out with Atsushi for a day and see what it was like to ride a SWI Aequus around.

When you get up in the morning, you expect it to be super busy, but surprisingly the city is super quiet. The roads are incredibly smooth and the drivers are super respectful of cyclists. A city you would expect to be in chaos is actually perfectly in order.

Don’t let the stillness of the morning blind you to the vibrancy of the evening, which is when Japan really comes alive, as you can hear and see in Shibuya Crossing.

A massive shout out to the team in Japan who crushed this edit. We can’t wait to come back and spend the day with you guys again soon.
