line+ Wins the Design Commission for Leapmotor Global Headquarters

line+ has won the architectural design competition for Leapmotor Global Headquarters in Hangzhou, China. Led by line+ co-founder and principal architect Fanhao Meng, the team was selected from a field of leading Chinese and international design practices.

Founded in Hangzhou in 2015, Leapmotor is a technology-driven intelligent electric vehicle company committed to the in-house development and production of core technologies. It has become the first emerging Chinese EV brand to surpass 100,000 deliveries in a single month.

As Leapmotor enters a new phase of growth, its global headquarters will serve not only as a center for work and R&D, but also as a platform connecting organization, innovation, brand, and city.

Located in the core Olympic Sports district of Binjiang, the site sits beside Hangzhou Olympic Sports Expo City, at a key intersection of the city’s central axis and the Qiantang River development corridor. Facing the river and overlooking Qianjiang New City CBD, it offers expansive views to the north, west, and east.

With a total GFA of approximately 130,000 sqm, the project brings together headquarters offices, R&D, and exhibition spaces. Fanhao Meng will serve as lead designer and chief architect, overseeing the project from concept through implementation.

S³ Resort-Living Habitat | Park Lane Complex Phase II, Sanya

“Spirit, Sense, Service — resort living is more than an arrangement of functions and spaces. It cultivates a state of being, a mode of perception, and a way of life.” — Peidong Zhu

Unlike a conventional holiday or short trip, such stays extend over a longer duration and involve fuller participation in everyday life. Their purpose is not simply to leave daily routine behind, but to establish a temporary yet relatively settled life elsewhere.

Building on this understanding, Peidong Zhu, co-founder and chief architect of line+, was invited by China Resources Land in 2024 to undertake a systematic study of resort living as an emerging residential type. Park Lane Complex Phase II became its first architectural application.

These three dimensions—SPIRIT, SENSE, and SERVICE—are translated into a spatially operative framework: S³ Resort, a system for creating a Resort-Living Habitat. Through it, the relations among layout, envelope, spatial organisation, and environment are reconfigured.

In the Haitang Yuefu dwellings, the “scenario balcony”—extra-deep and wrapped around a 270-degree corner—extends domestic life towards the landscape and accommodates a range of activities. The “holiday kitchen” dissolves the divisions between living, dining, and cooking. Its open, full-width arrangement connects directly with balconies and terraces, producing a continuous indoor–outdoor field of use.

As an evolving design trajectory, S³ Resort offers an alternative point of entry into the design of resort-living housing, while leaving the framework open to other sites, programmes, and ways of life.

“A headquarters building is, at its core, the spatial outcome of an organisational system. It should not be designed as an image, but derived as a structure—once that structure coheres, the image follows.”— Fanhao Meng

As Hangzhou continues its shift towards Qiantang River-centred development, the coordinated growth of the Olympic Sports Expo City and Qianjiang Century City is consolidating the river’s south bank as a major district for business and innovation.

The Tianwei Holding Group Headquarters is taking shape within this urban transformation. Commissioned by the client, Fanhao Meng, Co-Founder and Chief Architect of line+ studio, leads the project as design principal and chief architect. He coordinates architecture, interiors, landscape, façade and lighting, maintaining design control from concept through implementation. The project introduces a future-oriented high-rise headquarters complex to one of Hangzhou’s fastest-developing urban districts. Its main structure has now risen above ground, with completion and opening scheduled for early 2028.

With a total gross floor area of nearly 92,000 square metres, the complex comprises two towers rising to 145 metres and brings together corporate offices, an upscale hotel and supporting retail. Upon completion, it will strengthen the district’s business infrastructure, establish a new marker on the south-bank skyline and contribute to Hangzhou’s expanding headquarters economy and evolving urban identity.

line+ NEWS | Peidong Zhu Speaks at the RIBA UK–China Forum in London

On 20 July, following the Cambridge session, Peidong Zhu, Co-Founder and Chief Architect of line+ studio, was invited to speak at the UK–China Forum: Integrated Morphology of Future Cities – London, held at UCL. He delivered a keynote lecture and participated in a panel discussion. The event was jointly organised by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the UCL Centre for Global Infrastructure Resilience.

While the Cambridge session focused on architectural practice, local context, and spatial relationships, the London session introduced perspectives from urban research, infrastructure resilience, and mixed-use development.

The forum was moderated by John Nahar, Regional Director for RIBA London. Dr Wei Shen, Associate Professor at UCL, and John Nahar delivered the opening remarks. Participants represented organisations including RIBA, UCL, Foster + Partners, RSHP, Space Syntax, line+, weico architects, and YANG & Associates Group.

In his lecture, Zhu developed two lines of inquiry—Poetic Continuity and Cyber-Technical Imagination—and extended the idea of a Handcrafted Habitat from the scale of an individual building to that of urban systems. As cities grow denser, programmes become more complex, and ways of living continue to change, architecture must work in coordination with transport, public space, development mechanisms, and long-term operations.

The panel discussion explored how flexibility can avoid becoming a technological spectacle, and how hotels and residential projects can respond to future changes in users and patterns of use. Zhu argued that technology should not be treated as an end in itself, but as a responsive tool serving cities, residents, clients, and operational needs.

For hotels and residential developments, genuine flexibility often emerges in shared and public spaces. Adjustable façades, spatial dimensions, and plan configurations can allow architecture to respond continuously to different activities, climates, and times of day.

From Cambridge to London, Zhu’s presentation moved from poetic architectural expression towards complex urban systems. By bringing methods developed through China’s urban and rural transformation into a global context, line+ seeks to identify common ground across different regions and continue exploring the future relationship between architecture and the city.

Through two lines of inquiry—Poetic Continuity and Cyber-Technical Imagination—Zhu shared line+’s reflections on contemporary architectural practice in China: architecture is not merely a built object, but a medium for organising relationships and responding to change.

From Cambridge to London, Zhu’s presentations moved across different building types, scales, and contexts, extending from poetic architectural expression to complex urban systems. For line+, placing architectural approaches developed through China’s urban and rural transformation within a global context is not only about presenting reflections rooted in local practice during a period of industry transition. It is also about comparing methods across regions, identifying common ground through difference, and continuing to explore the future relationship between architecture and the city.

We're delighted to share that Xinchang Sports Center by line+ has been shortlisted for the 2026 World Architecture Festival (WAF) in the Completed Buildings – Sport category.

📍 About the Project
The project explores a new architectural prototype — Sports Mall — transforming a sports venue from an event container into a vibrant generator of everyday urban life. A central public hub connects arenas, training facilities, retail, exhibition spaces, hotel, and community programs, creating a 120,000 m² destination where sport, leisure, culture, and social life coexist.

Since opening, the center has hosted more than 50 national and international sporting events, alongside concerts, markets, and family activities, becoming a new civic catalyst for the city.

Peidong Zhu Invited to Speak at the RIBA UK–China Forum – Cambridge

On 17 July 2026, Peidong Zhu, Co-Founder and Chief Architect of line+ studio, attended the RIBA UK–China Forum – Cambridge at Clare Hall, University of Cambridge, where he delivered a lecture and participated in a panel discussion.

Jointly organised by the Royal Institute of British Architects, the Cambridge Association of Architects, and Clare Hall, the forum was held under the theme “Integrated Morphology of Future Cities.” It brought together architects, designers, academics, and industry representatives from China and the UK to explore how architecture can establish sustainable spatial relationships across different scales and systems while responding to complex programmes, long-term adaptability, local culture, and public life.

In his lecture, “THE POETIC AND THE CYBERNETIC: From Duality to a Handcrafted Habitat,” Peidong Zhu shared his reflections on contemporary architectural practice in China. As urban development moves from rapid expansion towards renewal, changing lifestyles, and technological iteration, he proposed that architecture should no longer be understood merely as a built object, but as a medium for organising relationships.

The lecture developed through two lines of inquiry: Poetic Continuity, which extends relationships between people, nature, time, memory, and place; and Cyber-Technical Imagination, which explores how kinetic mechanisms, digital technologies, and embodied perception can generate new spatial experiences and public events.

In high-density urban contexts, the two are integrated through the idea of a Handcrafted Habitat—a living environment that is perceptible, experiential, and capable of sustained operation—ultimately pointing towards an Architecture of Relations for future cities.

The panel discussion was moderated by Patrick Usborne, Director of Perpendicular Architecture and Chair of the Cambridge Association of Architects. Peidong Zhu was joined by Joanna Bacon, Managing Partner at Allies and Morrison; Francé Davies, Director of Development at Clare Hall; and Bangsheng Yang, Founder and Design Principal of YANG & Associates Group.

Through this exchange, line+ brought observations and working methods developed through practice in China into an international discussion on technological transformation, spatial adaptability, and contemporary urban development.

line+ Reinterprets “Shanshui Villa Living” at ZHONGTIAN & HIWELL · ALTOS in Hangzhou

Located in Hangzhou’s Baima Lake district, ZHONGTIAN & HIWELL · ALTOS was led by Peidong Zhu, Co-Founder and Chief Architect of line+. Surrounded by lake and hills, the site has an FAR of just 1.1, making it one of Binjiang District’s rare low-density residential developments in 30 years.

For line+, villa living is not simply a home with its own ground and sky, but a residential archetype through which people reconnect with nature. The design introduces an Aman-inspired aesthetic of understated luxury, grounded in the Eastern spatial ethos of restraint, openness and reverence for nature. This is expressed through permeable courtyards, extended sightlines, restrained materials, and a fluid dialogue between life and the environment.

🏞️ The masterplan combines stacked villas to the north with terraced courtyard houses to the south, creating broader frontages and more usable courtyards.

🌱 Balconies, terraces and roof gardens extend the courtyard vertically, allowing daily life and nature to grow together.

📐 Vertical walls provide privacy, while horizontal lines create depth and openness. Planting zones on every level allow nature to become part of the architecture.

Within Hangzhou’s lake-and-hill landscape, line+ reconsiders the relationship between life, nature and architecture, rebuilding the connection between people and nature within the limits of the city.

Fanhao Meng Invited to Participate in the Aedes Exhibition in Berlin and Deliver a Lecture

Recently, Fanhao Meng, Co-founder and Chief Architect of line+, was invited to participate in A STRUCTURE OF FEELING: Young Architects and China’s Conjuncture at the Aedes Architecture Forum in Berlin. He attended the opening and forum and delivered a lecture, sharing line+’s recent practices and reflections with architects and scholars from across Europe.

Twenty-five years after Aedes presented TU MU, which introduced a generation of independent Chinese architects to an international audience, A Structure of Feeling turns its attention to a new generation working amid major shifts in social conditions, industrial structures, and construction practices.

Curated by Changjun Gao, with Xiangning Li as Curatorial Advisor, the exhibition features two projects by line+: Lishui Guyanhuaxiang Art Center and Mansion on Lotus Mountain. The two works explore how architecture can respond to nature, culture, everyday life, and the public realm across different regional and programmatic contexts.

During the forum, Fanhao Meng delivered a lecture titled From Land to Relationships. Through six recent projects, he discussed the evolving value of contemporary architecture through the lenses of community, land, everyday life, humanistic concerns, memories of dwelling, and mechanisms of negotiation.

As architectural practice shifts from new construction to the renewal of existing environments, and from rapid urbanization to changes in demographic and social structures, its focus is also moving from “land” toward “relationships”—reconnecting people with communities, everyday life, cultural memory, and place.
