Function vs form is a false choice in solar carport design.

A fixed-tilt H-beam deck is for kWh and LCOE. An architectural BIPV canopy is for the lobby view. Hide 5-8° of fall, design the gutters, and you can keep more than 90% of the energy. Aesthetic packages typically cost 15-30% more.

A beverage plant rarely gives you one clean rectangle. This job sat on several sheds with different roof pitches, walkways, and plant rooms in the way. The array still had to stay serviceable and drain water the way the roof already did.

We used a metal-roof clamp layout so the structure follows the existing sheets. No extra penetrations. JA Solar modules, SMA inverters, Solaracks mounting throughout.

Result: 4.985 MWp on a live production site, installed as a working roof, not a science project.

Most solar canopies are sold as panels on steel. That is only one roof plane.

Six options worth specifying: standard mono PV, bifacial semi-transparent glass, polycarbonate infill, aluminium composite solid zones, standing-seam metal with PV above, and full BIPV integrated glazing.

They trade light transmission, waterproofing, cost premium, look, and maintenance. Dry cover and max kWh rarely want the same build-up.

FRP walkways look sharp on day one. On a hot roof they fade, lose grit, and start to chalk and soften.

What buyers usually get:
• Warranty around 3 years
• Real life around 7-10 years

That is short for a 25-year PV plant. Replacing walkways mid-life means labor, shutdown windows, and another purchase order.

Aluminum walkways hold mill finish and structural stiffness outdoors. ZAM (Zn-Al-Mg) steel adds coating life for tougher sites without the FRP UV fade path.

Same job: safe O&M access between panel rows. Different clock on when you replace them.

Every multi-site rooftop starts on the drawing, not on the crane.

10.5 MWp across several industrial roofs. Different shed lengths, different walkways, different shade lines. One layout that ignores that and you lose rows, or you force a rack that does not fit.

The plan here is the work: array blocks drawn to the actual roof, string paths marked, keep-outs around HVAC and edges left open. Mounting follows that drawing so rails stay continuous and service aisles stay usable.

Result is a grid-tied rooftop package that can be built shed by shed without redesigning the clamp and rail set each time.

Buyers often ask why a solar carport is not tilted like a ground mount.

Because the canopy has to shade cars, clear vans, shed water, and survive wind first. That is why most commercial designs land around 5-15°, not the “best PV angle” from a latitude table.

Gains: lighter steel, usable clearance, denser packing over asphalt.
Costs: some annual yield, slower soiling/snow shed.

A solar canopy that ponds water or dumps it on the driving aisle failed the drainage brief, not the steel brief.

Size the system for a 10-year, 5-minute storm, not annual rainfall. Water runs panel face to slope to gutter to downspout to the lot drain. Integrated U-channels make a BIPV canopy waterproof. An eave gutter on an open carport only catches the sheet at the edge.

A multi-storey factory roof is a tight site. Limited area. HVAC units already claiming space. The array still had to sit clean and stay serviceable.
