Feed the People - Community Food Gardens Cyprus

Feed the People - Community Food Gardens Cyprus FEED THE PEOPLE was a community project by the people for the people to promote the cultivation of h We are all connected to food because we all eat.

Mission
To promote a diverse, sustainable and organic local food system for Paphos in particular and Cyprus in general. Vision and Aims:
To promote a sustainable organic food system in Paphos by establishing communal food gardens as well as allotments and providing food and garden education programs, creating networking opportunities in the local food system, and increasing availability of locally

grown food for all people in Paphos, thereby providing a practical solution for preventing hunger and poor nutrition for everyone in our community. Values
We believe in a strong local economy for Paphos and that a strong local food system is essential to building that economy. We believe that food systems should be sustainable and organic in order to protect our health and our environment and therefore we strongly promote permaculture principles in our gardening practices. About Us:
FEED THE PEOPLE is a local nonprofit dedicated to creating a fair and sustainable food system for everyone in our community, as well as participating in a nationwide grassroots effort to build a movement for sustainable food gardening in Cyprus while supporting worldwide efforts to the same goal. We want to connect with our communities to show them we can all be connected to a sustainable and fair food system that is affordable to all. Our food system right now is harmful to the environment and our health, and that’s because we have lost that connection to our food. We want to re-establish this connection. Our current project is installing wicking beds made from recycled pallets at the homes of our community members. Niki is proudly watering the grow bed that we installed at her home today. The beauty of these beds is that they use much less water, are resilient in the relentless Cyprus summers and can be installed on concrete, the favourite surface of Cypriot developers.

Our group has sowed a lot of seeds here in Paphos which will be shared at the gathering in April when the seedlings will be swapped for varieties we don't have or given away to members of the public. The idea is for everyone who receives seedlings to save seeds from their plants and bring them back to share at the 2016 collective planting event.

On Valentine’s Day, February the 14th, we packed cameras, tripods and other necessary equipment and we went to experience and film an event of love.

During the night the workshed at the Anasa Community Wellness Centre (behind the Pandanasa Church) was broken into. The burglars stole a compressor (blue) a welding plant (blue), a brand new chainsaw (green), a brand new grinder and a new tin of grinding discs, a black toolbox with a red lid which was full of spanners and other tools, a brand new box of welding rods and various other tools. Last week a stainless steel sink on a metal stand was stolen from behind the centre. My husband was busy building a pergola here at the Anasa Centre and now all his tools are gone and he cannot finish the job. This is a huge blow. If you are offered any of these items please contact Annelie on 99714325 or the police right away. Please share.
