Packing ist der Startpunkt zu einer Neubetrachtung des Fußballs. Das Kriterium ist, dass sich nach einer gelungenen Offensivaktion weniger Gegner zwischen Ball und gegnerischem Tor befinden als vor der Aktion. Diese überspielten Gegner können ihr Tor nicht mehr verteidigen. Sie sind daher gepackt und aus dem Spiel genommen. Die Methodik, mit einer Aktion dafür zu sorgen, dass weniger Gegner zwisch

en dem Ball und dem gegnerischen Tor stehen, heißt Packing. Das Aufsummieren der nach der Packing Methode überspielten Gegner liefert zwei aussagekräftige Kennzahlen:

Gegner können auf verschiedene Weisen überspielt werden – durch Vertikalpässe, Diagonalbälle oder Dribblings. Aus allen Situationen werden die überspielten Gegner aufsummiert. Das Überspielen der Verteidiger ist besonders effektiv und hat den größten Einfluss (engl. Impact) auf den Torerfolg. Deshalb werden die überspielten Verteidiger gesondert aufsummiert und als Impect bezeichnet.
