| Progress doesn’t need an audience |
On International Women’s Day, Open Platform pays tribute to architect Eva Koppel, one half of the Danish power couple Eva & Nils Koppel. Following their 1930s training under modernist master Alvar Aalto, the duo became the defining architectural force of the Danish welfare state throughout the 1950s and 60s.
When men were the face of the industry, the Koppels operated as “Siamese twins,” making their individual contributions inseparable. Eva headed projects and conducted technical supervision on construction sites. She was deeply feared and respected by the bricklayers when checking if the hardness of the mortar joints was correct.
In spite of one of the most remarkable careers in Danish architecture, the Koppels are unfairly unknown today. This is why Open Platform co-authored the “duograph” on Koppel (Strandberg Publishing 2017) and continues to lead lectures and tours—efforts that directly influence our own architectural practice and design philosophy.
Being an architect couple and parents of two daughters, our tribute is indeed a homage to equality. It is an acknowledgment that Eva & Nils possessed universal virtues rather than gender-specific ones, such as braveness, initiative, creativity, meticulousness, diligence, stubbornness, and proficiency.
In times of climate crisis and war, the architecture of Eva & Nils Koppel is more relevant than ever. Their work was defined by material honesty, human scale, and restraint. Yet innovative and original. Open Platform is proud to stand on their shoulders as a modern successor to this honest heritage.
While much of today’s architecture is designed for the digital lens, we prefer atmospheric depth over performative spectacle, building a silent manifesto of substance rather than a loud monument of ego. For us, silence is not isolation, but a private sanctuary for development.
Shout out to the clients who value creators, not imitators. Vision sees the source. Imitation sees the shadow.
