Aswan Dam خزان أسوان The Aswan Dam or Old Aswan Dam was begun in 1898 and finished in 1902 by the British. Aswan is a city on the first cataract of the Nile in Egypt.

It was made of Aswan Granite and it was 100 feet high, 88 feet deep at its base and about one and a half miles long. Without impoundment the River Nile would flood each year , as waters flowed down the river. These floods made the soil fertile for farming. there came a need to control the flood waters to protect farmland and cotton fields, while in a low-water there was widespread drought and fami

In the late 1800's, it was decided that a dam should be built on the Nile to help control the flooding. It was widened and heightened several times without being able to solve the problem. The Old Dam was enlarged twice in the early part of this century. However it proved insufficient for Egypt’s perceived needs .lt had to be opened annually to allow the flood waters of the Nile through. It was however modernized in 1960, and is also producing electricity

Aswan is a city on the first cataract of the Nile in Egypt.
Without impoundment the River Nile would flood each year , as waters flowed down the river. These floods made the soil fertile for farming. there came a need to control the flood waters to protect farmland and cotton fields, while in a low-water there was widespread drought and famine. خزان أسوان هو سد مائي يقع في مدينة أسوان في جنوب مصر. تم البدء في بناءه عام 1899 وانتهى العمل فيه عام 1906، بناه ووضع حجر أساسه الخديوى عباس حلمى الثانى بن الخديوى محمد توفيق بن الخديوى إسماعيل واُفتتح قي عهده, وتم تعليته مرتين اخرها عام 1926 ليحجز المياه الزائدة في موسم الفيضان لتُستخدم لاحقاً، لكنه كان لا يحجز المياه لأكثر من عامٍ واحد. لذا بُني السد العالي، أو ما يطلق عليه سد أسوان العالي لاحقاً خارج حدود المدينة


فكر محمد علي في إنشاء خزان أسوان، وكلف فعلاً لينان پاشا المهندس الفرنسي أن يعيد بحيرة موريس التي كانت في عهد الأسرة الثانية عشر إحدى عجائب الدنيا، ولكن مباحث لينان أدت إلى عدم إمكان ذلك، ثم جدد السير سكوت مونگريڤ هذه المباحث، وقر الرأي على إنشاء خزان أسوان (1898-1912). واشترك في عمله السير ويلكوكس الذي قام بمعظم أعمال الري في وسط الدلتا. وكان الغرض من هذا الخزان العظيم خزن الماء في مجرى النيل في الصيف لتنتفع به الأراضي عند انخفاض النيل في الصيف.
