A living wall covering over 800 m² of the museum’s façade, just a few steps from the Eiffel Tower.

This is one of the most iconic vertical gardens in the world, designed by botanist Patrick Blanc and inaugurated in 2006 as part of the museum project by Jean Nouvel.

The wall hosts around 15,000 plants from hundreds of species (376), carefully selected from different climates and ecosystems around the globe.

Instead of soil, plants grow on a layered system of felt attached to a metal frame, allowing roots to anchor and receive nutrients through a continuous hydroponic irrigation system.

This technique recreates natural cliff ecosystems, where plants thrive without traditional ground, adapting to humidity, shade, and vertical growth.

More than a façade, it’s a living ecosystem that evolves over time colors, textures, and density shifting with the seasons and environmental conditions.

A pioneering project that blurred the line between architecture, botany, and art, and helped redefine how cities can integrate nature.

One of those places that makes you rethink what a “garden” can be.

I present to you a project that has truly tested me… and one I’m deeply proud of.

A large vegetal waterfall descends from the architecture all the way to the ground. A living mantle that transforms the building into landscape.

The design blends a jungle-like aesthetic with Mediterranean nuances, where heights, textures, and tones intertwine.
Monstera, aroids, and ferns bring volume and verticality, while grasses and Mediterranean species introduce light, flowering, and sun resilience.

With more than 390 m² and nearly 14,000 plants, this vertical ecosystem (using the F+P system by Paisajismo Urbano) works as a single living organism, improving environmental quality and redefining Barcelona’s urban space, standing as one of the largest vertical gardens in Spain.

✈️🌿 Visiting gardens

🖼️ Artwork: Puppy
📍 Location: Bilbao
✍🏻 Artist: Jeff Koons

38,000 flowers forming a puppy over 12 meters tall.

This is Puppy, the living sculpture created in 1992 by Jeff Koons that welcomes visitors to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

The piece consists of a steel structure covered with planting panels that hold around 38,000 seasonal flowers, replaced twice a year. An internal automated irrigation and drainage system keeps this monumental topiary alive.

Inspired by the tradition of 18th-century European gardens and the art of topiary, Puppy combines gardening, engineering, and contemporary art.

Petunias, begonias, marigolds, lobelias, and impatiens create this living mosaic that changes with the seasons.

Since 1997, it has become one of Bilbao’s most recognizable icons.

One of my must (visit spots every time I set foot in Bilbao) a beautiful city with a giant puppy that transforms the architecture and lets us witness the passage of time through the seasons.
