In the remote mountains of the Sierra de Segura, I embraced a thousand-year-old oak — a guardian of the forest whose roots have held the Earth for centuries. 🌍

Here, among abandoned villages and empty valleys where only a few people remain, the silence carries its own kind of wisdom. The forest breathes differently when human voices are rare, and the trees seem to speak louder in their stillness.

When I wrapped my arms around the oak, I felt more than rough bark: I felt the strength of roots that dig deep into forgotten soil, the quiet persistence of life that continues even when people have gone, and the eternal connection between forest, earth, and soul. 🌿

Today, as the Tree Hugging World Championship takes place in Finland, I share my embrace from Andalusia. May the whispers of these mountains, the wisdom of abandoned places, and the grounding power of the forest travel beyond borders. 💚

Every year on Pentecost Monday, the Virgin of El Rocío is carried through the village of El Rocío in a breathtaking procession that lasts up to 11 hours. Starting in the early morning hours—often around 3:00 AM—she moves through a sea of pilgrims, carried on the shoulders of the Almonteños, surrounded by chants, prayers, and deep devotion.
This image captures just one moment of that sacred journey, when time stands still and faith fills every corner of the village.

On the sacred night before Pentecost Monday, time stands still in El Rocío. In the early hours, amidst candlelight, prayers, and overflowing emotion, the Almonteños lift the Virgen del Rocío from her altar and carry her through the sandy streets.

It is not just a procession — it is a miracle lived each year. A moment where faith becomes tangible, and generations come together to walk with the Blanca Paloma beneath the Andalusian sky.

In a private home in El Rocío, Alejandro Álvarez and Ana Martín offer a quiet moment of stillness amid the vibrant chaos of the Pentecost pilgrimage.

Álvarez wears the classic traje corto — the formal Andalusian rider’s outfit — complete with leather zahon chaps, originally designed for working on horseback. It’s a symbol not just of tradition, but of a specific masculinity shaped by land, labor, and ceremony.

Ana Martín, by contrast, embodies a different facet of El Rocío’s evolving aesthetic. Her traje rociera — the traditional pilgrim dress for women — reflects how fashion and devotion intersect. While rooted in folkloric silhouettes, these dresses have become subject to seasonal trends, color palettes, and individual tailoring. Designers and wearers alike reinterpret the form each year, blending heritage with a modern sense of identity.

Every year at Pentecost, tens of thousands of pilgrims cross Andalusia on their way to El Rocío — among them, women in brightly colored trajes gitanas, adorned with flowers, walking for hours under the sun, side by side with men on horseback and ox-drawn wagons.

Far from being a folkloric accessory to the event, these women are central figures in one of Spain’s most important religious pilgrimages. They cook, care, sing, and organize — often leading the emotional core of the romería. Their presence blends faith, resilience, and inherited tradition into something deeply powerful and often overlooked.

The traje gitana or traje rociera, sometimes seen as just a cultural costume, becomes here a symbol of continuity — of femininity anchored in devotion. The songs they sing aren’t just music; they are oral history, prayers in motion.

In the middle of a deeply patriarchal structure, these women carry the heartbeat of the pilgrimage — visible, proud, and unwavering.

Crossing the Río Quema – A Sacred Moment on the Way to El Rocío

One of the most emotional and symbolic moments of the Pentecost pilgrimage: the Brotherhood of Triana crossing the Río Quema.

This river marks more than just a crossing — it’s a spiritual gateway. Many pilgrims receive a symbolic “baptism” here, especially those walking the Camino del Rocío for the first time. The waters represent purification, blessing, and the start of a deeply personal journey of faith.

As the Simpecado (the sacred banner) enters the river, voices rise in prayer and song. It’s a moment filled with reverence, tradition, and tears of devotion. This is where the pilgrimage to El Rocío, celebrated every year at Pentecost, truly becomes sacred.

One of the most magical moments: witnessing the Brotherhood of Triana pass through a glowing field of sunflowers, bathed in golden light — surrounded by songs, prayers, and a deep sense of unity.

An unforgettable pilgrimage through the Andalusian countryside, moving on foot, on horseback, and in beautifully adorned carretas.

Every year at Pentecost, this journey becomes a living expression of tradition, devotion, and community. It’s more than a path walked — it’s a feeling that lingers long after the dust has settled.

Last year, I had the incredible privilege of joining the Brotherhood of Triana together with the amazing photographer — walking with them both to El Rocío. Three days of beauty, belief, and belonging.
