My recent interest in hand drills required filling the gap left by my Stanley brace, which is oriented toward large-diameter holes. This Millers Falls No. 5 —possibly dating between 1899 and 1911— is here to fill that void for drilling small-diameter holes.

This is an 'egg be**er' style drill, featuring a crank and gears. It still needs some maintenance and fine-tuning, as oiling the moving parts hasn't yet resulted in a completely smooth action.

The Record 778 is arguably the best vintage rabbet plane ever made. I managed to find one in great condition and fully complete, requiring only a light cleaning and a sharpening.

Even high-end chisels need a small adjustment out of the box. Flattening the back is essential, not only to achieve a flat and reliable reference surface, but also to get a good edge. A good edge is thin and flat, and if the back of the chisel isn’t corrected, it will never be.

This Marples and Sons saw finally received the attention it deserved: the rust was removed, the handle refinished with shellac, and the teeth sharpened. They were in rough shape, uneven in size, with some noticeably larger than others. I learned to sharpen saws specifically for this project. Now that it’s back in working order, I can move forward with building my workbench.

For unknown reasons, Facebook says that my page is now being removed from recommendations because it does not comply with their recommendation standards. Come on, it's a page about my first steps on woodworking with original content that doesn't violate any rules, and you're not giving me the option to appeal 🙁

Tools like these are difficult to find today. The current market is designed to produce items in series: functional, plain, inexpensive, and sometimes made with just enough quality to serve their purpose for a few years before breaking.

These instruments belong to a different era, with a different way of understanding objects, where the value of things well made — even if costly — was more appreciated.

Made a century ago, but designed to last three. These compasses will accompany me for the rest of my days.

A quick inspection is enough to see that these are on another level.

Solid packaging, great presentation, and high-quality finishes. Well-balanced, comfortable, and no visible machining marks.

Before cutting, it needs care. Taken apart, ready for restoration.
