Ribbed slab is one type of slab designed differently from solid slab.

HCB blocks are used with up to 7cm reinforced concrete on top.

Ribbed slab is preferred for quick casting. It is lower in cost than solid slab for some reasons. No need of waiting for setting for 21 days which entails formwork cost, human power handing and waiting and time value cost of money.

3. Work shortage

The number of contractors is increasing in the country. This needs hard work in parallel from the government to create work opportunities for all these contractors.

We all can witness now in reality that few contractors are having the works repeatedly while a bunch of the remaining are sitting idle. Some are thinking of even changing their capital to other sectors.

This is dangerous for it will affect all sectors of work by releasing a lot of employees to the human market. This will create an other assignment for the government.
This is thus the problem at the front to be tackled. How?

Options of solving the problems.

#1. Construction quality.

- developing a system to control the materials quality.
- developing a system to control the workmanship and ex*****on processes.
- making sure that the contractor is a professional.
- making sure that the rates are logical, feasible, and fair with respect to engineering work break down and current market.
- increasing performance bond, advance guarantee and defects liability period.

#2. Construction corruption
** Why do people give bribes? Because the corruption gate is wide while the legal gate is narrow.

- developing a framework of transparent bid process.
- considering an option of involving the contractors and consultants in the bidding process.
- considering nearby contractors of an other's contractor's payment witnessing.
- easing the way of contractors for cases and payments so that no need of paying bribes.
- using technology in contract and construction governance for quick responses.
- increasing the responsibility of clients and consultants as well as the contractors so that they can take care of their move in the corruption.
- increasing the percentage of government works to be given to contractors with fixed rate with respect that awarded in bids.

The construction industry is crucial for the development of a country.

This is true simply because it covers much of the economy and involves considerable part of the human resource.

It is thus important to tackle the main problems many of its stakeholders talk about.

The main problems talked about are the following:

1. Work shortage.
2. Construction quality.
3. Corruption in the industry.

So it is mandatory that these problems are considered to make its way easy and fair.

Stages of construction

Construction has three main stages:
-----------
#1. Inception stage(inception , feasibility) ---the stage at which the need, the requirement and the initiative of having the construction is developed in one's mind.

#2. Design stage(plan,design,bid, award)---the stage at which the initiated need is changed to a form and type with practical form to be applied on the ground.

#3. Construction stage(construction, commissioning, acceptance)---the stage at which the need having a form is changed to the physical existence on the ground as per the design made at stage 2 and made ready for the intended function.

Following these steps enable any engineer and owner to not regret for non correctable mistakes and missed needs.

Is our construction industry healthy?

- Few constructors are busy having a over projects.

- Some constructors are sitting idle.

- Constructors having won bids at the same time are with rates difference not logical.
( That means the rate difference should have been within logical profit margin difference which is not actually.)

These arrow pointed are big RHS reinforcements for the columns. The same have been made for all the beams. This is because it was found after construction that the columns ,beams and slab were under designed.

This is the cost of not involving the proper professionals during design and rushing in to construction.

~ Engineering is a branch of science dealing with research, design, and construction of buildings, roads, railways,bridges, and water related structures. All these are to serve the society.

~ All these engineering processes, from perception to construction output, should be evaluated in terms of the following three characteristics:

1. Strength - has to be strong enough to serve satisfactorily,
2. Aesthetics - has to be good-looking as much as possible,
3. Economics - has to be economical as much as possible.

~ Why do engineers tend to be politicians? Relate the above characteristics to a government's obvious behaviours to know.

1. Strength - a government has to have strong institutions and force to serve and make safe its people.
2. Aesthetics - the government has to be good -looking in terms of its structure, governance, democracy to the satisfaction of its people.
3. Economics - the government has to work hard enough to make its people prosperous with fair wealth distribution.

~ Count the engineers' exposure to corruption, bad governance, wastage of people's wealth and time due to weak budget management, people's fatigue in vain due to lack of basic needs,

~ So, doesn't it seem clear why politics is a close friend of engineering?
