A little Brick Club with Emma update 🧱❤️
There has been a lot happening quietly behind the scenes here, and I can finally share a little of what comes next for Brick Club with Emma.
Due to a change in family circumstances and our forthcoming relocation, I won't be running any further Brick Club sessions in Aberdeen.
Writing that sentence feels considerably bigger than it looks.
Since the first Brick Club session in June 2024, I have had the privilege of welcoming some quite wonderful children to my LEGO-covered tables. Together we have built far more than the models in front of us.
There have been friendships and negotiations. Shared jokes and occasional frustrations. Problems solved, ideas changed, instructions deciphered, turns taken, help requested and offered. There have been children learning more about one another and, often, a little more about themselves.
And throughout all of that, they have been teaching me too.
Brick Club has strengthened my belief that play gives us an extraordinary opportunity to notice children: how they think, communicate, create, persevere, connect, manage uncertainty and gradually develop confidence in their own capabilities.
It has also reinforced something equally important to me.
The adults supporting children need places for thought, reassurance and connection too.
So although Brick Club sessions in Aberdeen are coming to an end, Brick Club with Emma isn't disappearing.
This page—and my website—will continue.
I want to use this space to share more of what the children have helped me notice: thoughtful observations about child development, play, communication, confidence and social-emotional growth; practical ideas that may help the adults supporting them; and reflections on some of those small moments in childhood that can tell us much more when we give ourselves time to notice them.
There will still be LEGO here, of course! 🧱
But perhaps there will also be more opportunities to explore what happens around the bricks.
To every family who has trusted me with their child, every professional who has taken an interest in my work, everyone who has recommended Brick Club to somebody else, and those who have recently contacted me hoping to join a future block: thank you.
I'm incredibly grateful for what this little club in Aberdeen has been allowed to become.
This particular chapter is ending.
The learning, curiosity and conversations it created are very much coming with me into whatever grows next.
I hope you'll come too. ❤️
