A little Brick Club with Emma update 🧱❤️

There has been a lot happening quietly behind the scenes here, and I can finally share a little of what comes next for Brick Club with Emma.

Due to a change in family circumstances and our forthcoming relocation, I won't be running any further Brick Club sessions in Aberdeen.

Writing that sentence feels considerably bigger than it looks.

Since the first Brick Club session in June 2024, I have had the privilege of welcoming some quite wonderful children to my LEGO-covered tables. Together we have built far more than the models in front of us.

There have been friendships and negotiations. Shared jokes and occasional frustrations. Problems solved, ideas changed, instructions deciphered, turns taken, help requested and offered. There have been children learning more about one another and, often, a little more about themselves.

And throughout all of that, they have been teaching me too.

Brick Club has strengthened my belief that play gives us an extraordinary opportunity to notice children: how they think, communicate, create, persevere, connect, manage uncertainty and gradually develop confidence in their own capabilities.

It has also reinforced something equally important to me.

The adults supporting children need places for thought, reassurance and connection too.

So although Brick Club sessions in Aberdeen are coming to an end, Brick Club with Emma isn't disappearing.

This page—and my website—will continue.

I want to use this space to share more of what the children have helped me notice: thoughtful observations about child development, play, communication, confidence and social-emotional growth; practical ideas that may help the adults supporting them; and reflections on some of those small moments in childhood that can tell us much more when we give ourselves time to notice them.

There will still be LEGO here, of course! 🧱

But perhaps there will also be more opportunities to explore what happens around the bricks.

To every family who has trusted me with their child, every professional who has taken an interest in my work, everyone who has recommended Brick Club to somebody else, and those who have recently contacted me hoping to join a future block: thank you.

I'm incredibly grateful for what this little club in Aberdeen has been allowed to become.

This particular chapter is ending.

The learning, curiosity and conversations it created are very much coming with me into whatever grows next.

I hope you'll come too. ❤️

A large UK randomised controlled trial found that LEGO® based therapy was found to be feasible for schools to deliver and highly acceptable to the people involved.

At Play Included, research matters to us.

We work with researchers, educators, clinicians and people with lived experience to strengthen the evidence behind the Brick-by-Brick® programme. Research helps us understand what works, for whom and in which settings. It also informs how we develop our training, resources and wider approach.

We believe research should not stay hidden in academic papers and we love to share the latest research findings relevant to LEGO therapy in our free members’ webinars.

I've been thinking about Brickmania Peterhead all week.

Not just because of the incredible displays (although they were amazing!), but because of something I didn't notice until afterwards.

My Brick Club with Emma area was a glorious mess of loose bricks, children chatting, experimenting, taking models apart and starting again.

Complete freedom to create.

As I wandered further through the hall, I realised something.

The displays weren't separate from what was happening on my floor.
They were the next chapters.

Jean and Warren's beautifully engineered builds, Simon's imaginative Sponge Bob underwater world, Raymond's space displays, Vicki's stunning Stargate Atlantis creations, John's Broke Brick Mountain, Christine's lively city scenes, Kitty's peaceful gardens, Alison's humorous city moments, Callum's fantasy worlds, Charli's ever-growing BrickHeadz collection... every single one of them began with exactly the same thing.

One brick.

One idea.

One person who enjoyed creating.

Sometimes we look at expertise and forget that it started with curiosity.

As someone who spends a lot of time watching children learn through play, I found that really encouraging 😄

The children building freely weren't "not there yet."
They were already on the same journey.

Brickmania felt like walking through a timeline of creativity—from first ideas to lifelong passion.

And I think that's rather wonderful.

✨ What's something you've learned that started with "just having a go"?

Over the past few weeks, I've been a little quieter on here.

Not because Brick Club has been quiet—quite the opposite!

I've been spending my time revisiting photographs, reading back through my notes, remembering conversations, smiles, funny quotes and wonderful creations, and writing individual Learning Journeys for every child who attended this term.

It has been one of the most rewarding pieces of work I've done.

Each journey has reminded me that behind every LEGO model is a child with their own way of thinking, noticing, imagining and making sense of the world. Having the privilege of slowing down enough to reflect on those moments before sharing them with families has been incredibly special.

Thank you to all of the parents who have entrusted me with your amazing children this term. I hope your Learning Journeys and photographs become something you enjoy looking back on together for years to come.

Now that they've all been sent, I can finally take a deep breath!

Alongside a little summer breathing space, I'm looking forward to sharing more of the thoughts that have been quietly taking shape behind the scenes. Brick Club has given me so much to reflect upon—not just about LEGO and play, but about childhood, belonging, curiosity and the many different ways children show us who they are when we take the time to notice.

So, whilst things may remain a little slower than usual over the summer, I hope to share some of those reflections with you over the coming weeks.

As always, thank you for following along and for being part of this lovely community.
