Great week spent completing timber restoration, splice repairs, render repairs and redecoration of this stunning mock Tudor property in East Sussex.

The timber joints had failed and water ingress had created lots of rot. Once replaced and repairs we undertook the decoration to all elevations. We used AllCoat to provide a breathable, but protected two coat layer.

The Almonry, Battle

Our team had the privilege to help restore the windows around the Grade 2* listed, 936 year old building in Battle - The Almonry.

With full listed consent from Rother planning we prepped all the timber frames and metal crittall windows by sanding them. The metal frames had two coats of AllCoat and all timber work was treated with a boron preservative.

Once repaired with traditional linseed oil putty, we then finished with two coats of Extra dark pallisander wood stain. To finish off the job we completed some lime repointing and a couple of areas which required English Oak splicing.

The comments of praise from passers by was enough to keep us going through the heatwave to get this gorgeous building looking its best again!

This customer called about bouncy floor tiles and a smell from the drain.

On further inspection the previous tiler had laid the tiles using a ‘dot and dab’ creating pockets of stagnant water under the floor. The joists also had no noggins and were screwed down to a loose floor plate with just a couple of screws, topped with shuttering ply!

We lifted the whole floor replaced rotten joists, added a lot of noggins and secured the floor plate properly. A new pre-formed wet room tray was installed along with 18mm marine ply and tile backer board before being re-tiled and the reinstallation of the screen, basin and w/c!

This weeks update on our garage conversion for

The roof has been replaced with new OSB and full EPDM rubber with new anthracite trims, the walls have all been boarded and skimmed, the garage storage side has been boarded and skimmed too thanks to All the vents have been installed and finished up with the first fix by installing the new tilting spots and socket boxes 👌🏻

Building control required an extra 50mm PIR on the front wall before FD30 board was installed which set us a back a day but good to see great progress this week!

Very excited to get the window brickwork out, new floors down and first couple of coats of paint on next week before the new window installation by

After our client had asked us to redecorate the rest of the elevation we already repaired, we had this 6ft piece of timber come off in our hands.

Moving quickly, we sourced a new length, weathered it, cut out sections for overlaps, trimmed it to size and shape, reinserted the original timber dowels and painted to match - all in two days alongside redecorating the whole elevation!

This wall isn’t solid brick.
It’s a historic brick-faced system built over a softer backing.

So when it fails, the solution isn’t to rip it out and rebuild in modern materials.

It’s to:
• Understand how it was originally built
• Repair like-for-like using breathable materials
• And blend the repair so it disappears

This is the difference between:
A repair that lasts
…and one that causes more damage

Sometimes the correct repair is not doing the work immediately.

This wall shows classic signs of long-term moisture retention — algae growth, vegetation, saturated brickwork and water discharge from the gutter above.

If we repointed the wall now, even using lime mortar, the masonry would still be saturated and the repair would likely fail prematurely.

Instead, the correct sequence when we attend the property next month is:

• Address the source of water
• Remove vegetation and organic growth
• Allow the wall to dry naturally
• Then carry out lime repointing when conditions are right

Older buildings require diagnosis before intervention.

Clear advice. Traditional materials. Work that lasts.
