The remains of a lovely but long disused ancient granite walled barn on Dartmoor.
We were asked to design a self-supporting timber frame to sit inside the walls, with sufficient overhang to cover and protect the ancient structure and allow the roof to drain to outside the walls.
The result is an interesting timber frame, made in locally grown Douglas Fir, with some Japanese styling, including a large overhang.
This was not a traditionally jointed and pegged frame, with most joints being notched and secured with coach screws. In a departure from our hand framing tradition, the timber frame was designed on our 3D CAD/CAM specialist timber design software which sent files direct to a Hundegger CNC timber machining facility for fast and accurate cutting.The barn is in an exposed location on Dartmoor and will need to tolerate the uncompromising weather that batters the moors every year!
As if to prove that the timber frame needed to be rock solid, the Dartmoor wind and rain arrived in time to test and soak us!

It was great to have the opportunity to make this Green Oak Cruck entrance porch for the lovely Duchy of Cornwall nursery at Lostwithiel. We also made a Green Oak Queen post rear porch for the entry to the gardens. Main building contractor was Classic Builders SW Ltd, with architectural design by The Hive Design Studio

We had a workshop visit today from Classic Builders SW Ltd and Ben Honey of the The Hive Design Studio to see the progress and process of this English Oak traditional cruck timber frame which is being hand cut in our workshop.

Crucks are usually two halves of the same trunk, framed together in pairs. There are over 2000 examples of historic crucks recorded in England and Wales, dating from around the early 13th century or later and many old farmhouses in the Devon countryside contain jointed cruck frames.

When you have a lot of heavy Oak beams to work on, very heavy duty trestles are an absolute necessity! This little lot was made recently - just in time for some new projects which are about to start.

These traditional hand crafted arch brace green oak timber framed trusses and purlins really enhance the character of this Dartmoor farmhouse.

This green oak timber framed pergola was made at our Devon workshop for a house in Salcombe, and installed in a garden about 30 metres below the nearest vehicle access. We used an electric winch, a genie lift and a lot of ingenuity and sweat to move all the heavy oak beams from the van to the site!
