Dutch Hyacinth - actually originating from the Mediterranean and Western Asia the Dutch hyacinth was introduce to Europe in the 16th century and cultivated in the Netherlands. A highly fragrant spring flower that blooms best in full sun, best planted in autumn before the ground is frozen. Hyacinths require free draining soil as their bulbs will not tolerate waterlogged soil.
Once flowered the spike should be cut near the base to prevent seeding, the foliage is best left to wither and deteriorate on its own allowing the bulb to store energy for the following season.
