Rats and other sewer dwellers really do come up into your home through your toilet – and its more common that you might think. See our post “How do rats get in your toilet” for more information on how (and why) they do it. Put simply – rats are excellent swimmers and sewers offer easy access to your toilet and home for hungry rodents.
You can of course easily prevent rats (and any other unwanted creatures) entering your toilet by fitting our MultiFlap valve, but as you are reading this article we will assume you didn’t know that… So what should you do?
First things first, contain the rat to the toilet by closing the lid. Pop something heavy on the lid – large rats can be strong enough to push it open. Close the bathroom door and lay a towel along the before calling a rodent or wildlife specialist in your area.
Don’t handle the rat; they are known to carry a variety of diseases and will probably be scared causing them to bite if they feel threatened.
Don’t be tempted to flush the toilet, rats are excellent swimmers and will probably come straight back.
