Bird nesting season is nearly over – is your site clearance planned?

With the end of August approaching, now is the time for pre-construction teams to be looking ahead at sites requiring tree, scrub or vegetation clearance.

Did you know? There isn't actually a fixed legal "bird nesting season" in the UK.

Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, wild birds, their eggs and nests are protected, and it is an offence to intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of a wild bird while it is in use or being built.

March to August is generally considered the main nesting period – but birds can nest outside these dates too.

So why does this matter? If vegetation clearance is left until later in the programme and active nests are present, works may need to be postponed or adapted, potentially resulting in:

1. Programme delays
2. Additional ecological and site costs
3. Changes to planned mobilisation dates
4. Knock-on effects to subsequent works

Planning clearance during the appropriate window, alongside the necessary ecological advice and checks, can help reduce these risks and get the site ready to schedule.

It wasn't the result we wanted last night, but what a journey it's been.

Reaching a World Cup semi-final is a fantastic achievement, and the England squad has given us plenty of memorable moments, nervous evenings and conversations along the way.

They've also once again achieved the impossible...turning the entire country into football managers, tactical analysts and substitution experts overnight.

At PGE, we appreciate what goes into performing at the highest level. It's the hard work behind the scenes, the teamwork, and the commitment to keep going that earns respect, whatever the final score.

Not every site clearance starts with machinery.

On a recent project in Leicester, our team worked alongside an ecologist to safely exclude badgers from an active sett ahead of a future housing development.

Following the ecologist's method statement we:

• Carefully cleared vegetation using just hand tools to minimise disturbance to wildlife.
• Installed one-way badger exclusion doors over the sett entrances.
• Fitted heavy-duty badger-proof wire mesh around each entrance, securely fixed in place to prevent re-entry.

The exclusion measures will remain in place for 21 days, allowing the ecologist to monitor activity and confirm the sett has been vacated before any further works can begin.

Projects like these demonstrate that successful site preparation isn't just about getting the job done—it's about carrying it out responsibly, safely and in full compliance with ecological requirements.

A great example of collaboration between our site team and specialist ecologists to ensure development and environmental protection go hand in hand.
