Went to fix a bathroom light for a customer this afternoon, another electrician had failed to return after fitting a new pendant and wiring it up incorrectly. There was 110 volts on the Neutral conductor…. Somewhere a switchline had probably been wired into the neutral. However there was only a line (live) and neutral at the light. So up into the loft i went, i found a bundle of exposed live conductors and sure enough the switch line had been mistaken for a neutral ! So i tidied them up the best i could, re- terminated them into an IP rated enclosure for mechanical protection/barrier, ensuring cable glands were used to secure the conductors . This coupled with ensuring the cables laid on top of the insulation so they are easy to spot( Not much play on the cables, so i was unable to clip them to the joists.) satisfies BS7671 wiring regulations

What is surge protection ?

Did you know that modern circuit breakers and surge protection are your first line of defence against fires and electrical faults.

Surge protection helps to keep your home or business protected from transient voltages.

A transient voltage is caused by the sudden release of stored energy, this can be due to lightening strikes, unfiltered electrical equipment, arcing, a capacitor bank or a generator being switched on or off. It causes abrupt changes in voltage and current conditions. These changes occur for a limited duration, usually microseconds or milliseconds but can have a profound effect on your electrical installation.

Hundreds of electrical transients occurr internally in power systrms everyday, due to switching operations of inductive loads, a blown fuse interupting a short circuit current is another example of an electrical transient that can affect your sensetive equipment.

A transient voltage may not cause damage straight away but over time unprotected equipment will get damaged.

How do we protect against these pesky transients ?

Surge protection devices (SPDs) are the most effective way to protect sensitive or vulnerable electrical systems.

The type of surge protector that we usually fit is a type 2 or type 3 , these protect against indirect ligthning strikes, switching transients, and transient over voltage.

This type of device acts like a pressure relief valve, absorbing and diverting excess voltage to ground during a surge event.

So when its time to upgrade or consumer unit, or you have recently had a new one installed and would like to have surge protection fitted, or you are not sure if your electrics are up to scratch? Give us a call for a quick chat or to book a safety check. Your peace of mind is worth it.

PAT testing—often overlooked, but absolutely vital for keeping your workplace safe and compliant!

What is PAT testing? It stands for Portable Appliance Testing, and it’s a process where we inspect and test all your plug-in electrical equipment to make sure it’s safe to use. Every business and landlord has a duty to keep appliances in good order, and regular PAT checks are a simple way to protect your people and your property.

Here’s how it works:
1️⃣ We visually inspect each appliance for signs of damage or wear
2️⃣ Use our Martindale tester to check insulation resistance, earth continuity, and leakage
3️⃣ Record every result in an official asset register for your records
4️⃣ Clearly label each item with a PASS or FAIL sticker, including test date and initials

Why bother? Because faulty appliances are a leading cause of workplace fires and electric shocks. PAT testing isn’t just a box-ticking exercise—it’s peace of mind, a safer environment, and often a requirement for insurance or compliance.

Not sure when your last PAT test was? Or want a professional, no-fuss check-up? Give us a call or message. We’ll handle the details—so you can get on with what you do best.
