A rare, exceptionally well-crafted and highly sculptural Swedish armchair, dating from the 1940s–50s and surviving in outstanding original condition.

Made from stained beech, the chair combines a sweeping bentwood arm rail with fine radiating spindles, a separately framed cane back and an original hand-woven split-cane seat. This highly skilled technique produces a resilient, lightweight surface - the fine weave beautifully complements the delicate spindle construction. A second pair of slender rails beneath the curved arms adds depth and definition to its sculptural form.

An exceptional Scandinavian chair, bringing together bentwood, Windsor and traditional split-caning techniques with considerable skill and originality.

A rare Italian monoxyl oak table with a monumental single-slab top hewn from a magnificent tree.

Rich in colour and character, the timber has exceptional grain, natural movement and a beautifully worn surface developed over centuries of use. The monumental slab is supported by solid trestle ends , joined by a hefty pegged stretcher.

The substantial original hand-forged iron bolts are a testament to the quality of the original construction, securing the top to the base.

This is a remarkable piece of Italian vernacular furniture , Incredibly difficult to find, - worth all the effort to bring it to back T&H.

A very fine English elm & ash Windsor armchair - Circa 1820 - 1840

An exceptionally well-made chair with particularly good proportions. The tall bowed back is filled with slender spindles above and below the shaped arm rail - the chair is open and elegant.

The sweeping arms are supported on curved uprights, the turned front legs and shaped stretchers complete a beautifully balanced frame.

The broad elm seat off the scale , with an extraordinary swirling figured grain running across the surface.
The rich, warm honey and to***co colour , running through to deep brown is so beautiful.
The arms, spindles and bow have the same natural softness, where the darker surface has worn back to reveal the lighter ash beneath.

Most probably made within the Thames Valley / Buckinghamshire Windsor tradition, where elm was favoured for the seat and strong, flexible ash for the turned and bent components.

In excellent condition for its age and standing very well 👌

A rustic French coffee table, bespoke made from old timbers with a thick oak slab top and one deep drawer. Simple, solid construction with a beautifully worn surface and warm, natural colour.

The old oak top has a beautiful surface, full of natural marks, grain and variation in colour. The chunky legs, made of poplar, give the table its strong rustic character without making it feel overly heavy.

A single drawer runs almost the full depth of the table, providing a generous amount of storage.

A practical and characterful piece, with the irregularities and patina of the old timber giving it the feel of a much earlier country table.

As of yesterday , 17th August 2026 , it is two years on since my old friend and mentor Geoffrey Hardy left us - he went off on his travels in a canoe shaped coffin , designed by him, for whenever that day arrived.

I can hear him…in the things I say , and he’s there when I open a tin of bees wax , rolling up my sleeves, to bring the table back to life - it always makes me smile!

Without him Twist & Hardy wouldn’t exist, the adventure started when I met him , that day in a green grocers in Sydney many years ago! What fun💃

You inspire me every day , “to be in your orbit was an adventure” Thank you Geoff - “Mr Hardy”

A rare and highly unusual English low hearth Windsor armchair, of exceptional proportions, with a broad pine seat and elongated ash bow passing through the arm structure — an extraordinary example of English vernacular chair-making.

Dating from the late 18th or early 19th century and remarkable for its unusual construction and extraordinary proportions.

Set low to the ground, the broad pine seat is surrounded by a finely worked ash frame. Most distinctive is the elongated bow back, which continues down through the arm structure towards the seat, creating an unusual continuous framework and giving the chair its unmistakable silhouette.

Probably originating in Yorkshire or the North Midlands, the chair appears to be the work of an accomplished regional chairmaker adapting the Windsor tradition to create low fireside seating. The combination of its deep, low stance, broad seat and tall sweeping bow is particularly rare.

The ash has developed a wonderfully mellow colour and natural wear over many years, complementing the simplicity and strength of the construction.

A rare example of English vernacular chair-making, with exceptional proportions and a highly unusual bow-through-arm construction.

A remarkable Welsh Border oak settle, c.1800.

The beautiful black-paint surface patina is completely original and untouched . The layers have worn naturally to reveal warm oak beneath - wonderful softened edges , bone dry surfaces and rich to***co tones tell the story of generations of honest use.

A practical piece of furniture, the seat lifts to generous storage beneath, originally used for household linens, and domestic necessities.

Furniture of this type was made to serve as seating, storage and a source of warmth beside the hearth. Few examples survive with such an honest surface and depth of colour.

A very good example of British vernacular furniture.

My beloved Uncle B would say “it is an honest piece”
