Incorrect construction and a bodge repair job on the top led to this chimney being totally saturated with no option to breathe , in the end the brickwork cracked under the strain and copious amounts of rainwater would travel down the flue , rusting the stove and staining the customer’s stonework fireplace , we could see from the discolouration of the brickwork above the lead tray that there was a serious problem.
The chimney was partially taken down ,rebuilt higher to comply with Regs to a nearby velux window , new flue liners installed with appropriate insulation and a secondary lead tray made to measure on site .

The right decision was made by the customer to remove this ageing chimney because of water ingress & future costs of repairs , it was very damp throughout and we discovered the old shiplap boards under the tiles had rotted & slipped down the roof taking the eave & roof tiles with it .

This old Aga flue was suffering from cracked flaunching , broken bricks and a squirrel gnawed terminal , the decision was made to replace the damaged bricks , swap the old terminal with a chimney pot and vent cowl , grind out the brickwork and repoint with lime mortar , now it’s all ready for what winter has to throw at it .

A large crack had appeared in this chimney because it had been built incorrectly, If there's no air space between the flue liner and the chimney, expansion during use will crack the surrounding brickwork and this one had no chance as you’ll see from the pics..
We took it down to the lead tray , which was also faulty , replaced the lead tray , installed new clay liners and rebuilt the chimney a little higher using lime mortar and the correct insulation .
