🥵☀️ Wondering why wasps are everywhere right now?

It's not just you. This warm weather is peak season for them.

Here's what's happening:

1. They're in overdrive
Warm weather = more energy. Wasps are foraging non-stop to feed their growing colonies. A nest that had 50 wasps in June can have 5,000+ by August.

2. They get more aggressive
Later in summer, the queen stops laying and the workers have less to do. They switch from hunting insects to hunting your sugars - your cider, ice cream, BBQ, bins. That's why they seem to bother YOU more now.

3. That nest is getting big
If you've heard buzzing in your loft, wall cavity, shed or eaves - it will only get larger and louder in this heat. Warm weather makes them expand fast.

Our advice from West Yorkshire Pest Control:
❌ Don't block the nest entrance - they'll find another way out, often INSIDE your home
❌ Don't try DIY foam / water in this heat - it angers the whole colony
✅ Keep bins sealed, cover food & drinks outside
✅ If the nest is near a door, window, or where kids/pets are, get it professionally treated.

☀️🌑 Don't worry if you see wasps acting strangely today!

The UK has a major partial solar eclipse tonight (12th August) and our stinging insects are going to get very confused.

What you'll see:
As the sky darkens around early evening, wasps will think it's suddenly night-time. They will stop foraging, fly back to the nest, and cluster together quietly. They actually become LESS active and LESS aggressive during totality.

What this means for you:
• No need to panic if you suddenly see more wasps around your nest / loft / shed - they're just heading home
• They will become active again 10-15 mins after the light returns
• An eclipse does NOT make wasps angry or more likely to sting

If you've had a wasp nest that has been unusually quiet today and then comes back to life tonight, that's completely normal. It's not gone away.

Ever wondered what's INSIDE a wasp nest? 🐝

We opened one up so you don't have to. Here's what's really in there:

1. It's made of paper. Wasps chew wood and mix it with saliva to build that papery shell. It's not mud, it's basically handmade paper.

2. Perfect hexagons inside. Under the outer cover are layers of neat, hexagonal cells — just like a beehive. That's where the queen lays her eggs and the larvae grow.

3. One queen, thousands of workers. A single nest can hold 3,000 - 5,000 wasps at its peak in late summer. And it only takes a few months to build.

4. They don't come back. Wasps never re-use an old nest. But a new queen will often build nearby next year if the spot is good.

Spotted a papery, grey ball in your loft, shed or eaves? Or seen wasps comign and going from an area on your property? Don't poke it, prod it, or spray it — the colony will defend it aggressively.

🐝 WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE TREAT A WASP NEST?

We get this question a lot, so here's exactly what to expect after a treatment.

The product we use for most wasp nests is Vulcan P5 DP - a professional-grade insecticidal dust. It contains 0.5% permethrin, a synthetic pyrethroid that provides rapid knock-down of crawling insects.

Here's how it works:

1. Precise Application -
We don't spray the whole nest. We apply a small amount of dust directly to the nest entrance or entry point. We never seal the entrance - this is important.

2. They Do The Work For Us -
As wasps enter and exit, they track the dust further into the nest's core, contaminating the entire colony, including the queen and larvae. The insecticide is carried into the core of the nest and eradication follows.

3. What You'll See Afterwards -
• First few hours: The nest will be VERY active. Wasps will become extremely agitated when exposed to insecticide. Please stay well away from the area and keep windows closed.
• Within 24 hours: Activity will drop dramatically. Most nests see activity stop within 24 hours.
• Next 2-3 days: The nest may still have some activity as foraging wasps return. As wasps return and enter the nest they will also be contaminated by the treatment and die off, thus ensuring the whole colony is effectively treated. It can take a few hours to take effect and a few days to kill the whole nest.

If activity is still present after 48 hours, give us a call and we can arrange a free revisit.
