❤️ The Fairway Roofing Story — A Family Business Built on Graft, Heart & Legacy
Fairway Roofing began back in 2003, founded by Hughie, the man who lived and breathed the trade. At the time, his son Sean was just 14 — school wasn’t for him, he wanted to be out on the tools, learning the graft properly. And that’s exactly what he did. From a young lad on the roofs to a skilled tradesman, Sean grew up with Fairway in his blood. In 2017, I (Kellie) joined the team. I learned the ropes from the office side — the admin, the estimates, the invoices — but I also got myself out on site whenever it suited me, climbing ladders, helping the lads, and getting a real feel for what the job actually involved. That hands‑on experience made me better at explaining things to customers in simple terms, whether it was a roof replacement, guttering job, or repairs. Everything Hughie passed to me, I handled.
For years, things ran smoothly. We were busy, steady, and strong.
Then the back end of 2023 hit. Hughie fell poorly with pneumonia and ended up in hospital for weeks. Suddenly it was just me and Sean holding the fort — and we did. Work was busy, the pressure was heavy, but we kept Fairway going until Hughie recovered enough to slowly return to the yard after around 10 weeks. Life felt normal again. Less stress. Hughie had always been the businessman, the backbone, and it was a relief to have him back.
Then came 18th April 2024 — the day everything changed.
Very suddenly, and heartbreakingly, Hughie passed away. For everyone who knew him, it was a devastating shock.
For Sean and Me, there was no time to grieve. We had seven lads relying on us to keep food on their tables and roofs over their families’ heads. We had Hughie’s legacy in our hands. Fairway was his baby — and now it had to become ours. So we got to work. Setback after setback hit us — broken vans, a broken cherry picker, repairs costing an arm and a leg — all within two months of losing Hughie.
But we kept going. We made changes, brought in new workers, strengthened the team, and pushed out an excellent standard of work. Summer arrived and work was flying. I thought, okay… I can do this.
Then winter came. Days off turned into more days off. I wondered how we’d cope — but we did. We got through it. We kept
Hughie’s contracts and
We gained new ones.
We sponsored the Bradford Bulls.
We grafted every single day, hoping that one day we won’t have to worry where the next job is coming from. Right now, we’re still beginners in business — but not in roofing.
Every day is a school day.
Every day we learn something new.
And being family‑run makes it harder… but when we succeed, it will be 100 times more rewarding.
Fairway Roofing isn’t just a business.
It’s a legacy.
It’s Hughie’s legacy.
And we’re keeping it alive.
