Day in the life of a HealthCare Field Service Engineer
What is it like to work as a Healthcare Field Service Engineer? In 2022, Fausto Cruz shared the answer to this based on his experience working as a Healthcare Field Service Engineer for GE Healthcare. Since then Fausto, has continued to develop his skills as a Healthcare Field Service Engineer and has completed a degree in Computer Engineering.
Work Life Balance
How do you balance working and family life? What advice can you give to other Field Service Engineers about balancing family and the work they do?
Balancing the busy routine of field engineering with family life is not easy; it is a daily exercise of priorities and self-knowledge. My wife is a senior nurse and leader at Hospital Sírio-Libanês, so we both understand demanding jobs. But when our son, Eduardo, was born, everything changed. Being a present father and husband became my biggest priority.
Today, family is the foundation of everything. If my home is not well, my work cannot be well either. That is why I plan my family time like a critical SLA (Service Level Agreement) as follows.
The “Discipline of Presence”
Monday to Friday, I take and pick up my son at school and go with him to his Parkour Kids classes, while my wife and I manage our workouts and commitments. Saturdays are for Eduardo’s swimming classes and free time. Sundays are for church, visiting our parents, and family time (unless I have an urgent preventive maintenance).
The Notification Shadow
We live in a world of constant messages. Having a separate work phone is very important for me. When I am off work, I simply turn off my corporate phone. I know myself: if it stays on and I see someone asking for help, I will stop everything to help them. So, turning it off is the best way to protect my quality time with my family.
My advice to colleagues is: you are unique and irreplaceable at home and in your child’s life. At work, you are a great professional who should be supported by a good team and system. Treat your family with the same dedication you put into troubleshooting. They are the foundation that never fails when you keep them first.
