It was a privilege to sit down with Scotty's Little Soldiers recently at a business event in London and to hear in detail about the work they do.

They support bereaved military children and young people who have lost a parent who served in the British Armed Forces – providing practical help, a sense of community, and opportunities that can make a real difference at an incredibly difficult time.

Hearing more about the impact of that work reminded us that support like this reaches far beyond the immediate moment. It helps families feel less alone, more connected, and better supported as they navigate life after loss.

We’re proud to be supporting Scotty’s Little Soldiers through our upcoming UES Golf Day on July 23rd and helping raise money for a charity doing such important work.

Some conversations stay with you long after the event itself. This was one of them.

We’re proud to continue supporting Community of Purpose CIC and the work they do through their Break Free Programme.

Their latest half-term programme shows what can happen when the right support is put around young people. Over the course of the week, 142 young people took part in activities designed to build confidence, create new friendships and open up new experiences.

That number is amazing. But the real value is in what it represents – trusted support, time away from difficult routines, and the chance for young people to feel more connected, more confident and more positive about what is possible.

Programmes like Break Free create opportunities that would not exist otherwise. They also show the impact community-led support can have when businesses, organisations and individuals get behind it in a meaningful way.

We’ve supported Community of Purpose for a number of years now, and it is a partnership we value highly. We’re pleased to play a small part in helping with this work as it continues.

Piling works are underway in Norwich to accommodate the new gantries.

In simple terms, piling provides the deep structural support needed to safely and reliably carry heavy infrastructure over the long term. On projects like this, it’s a key part of the groundwork, making sure the gantries have the strength and stability they need once the wider electrification package is in place.

It’s not the most visible stage of the job, but it’s an important one. Before the charging infrastructure can operate properly, the supporting structures beneath it need to be right.

More progress to follow as the project develops.

Weather like this is a reminder that refurbishment decisions need to account for more than how a building performs on an average day.

When temperatures push higher, weaknesses show up quickly. Overheating, poor ventilation, solar gain, inefficient plant, and buildings that are expensive to keep comfortable all become much more obvious.

That’s why refurbishments need to look at the building as a whole. Not just layout and appearance, but also how it will perform in more extreme conditions. Cooling, ventilation, controls, insulation, shading, and the overall efficiency of the services all start to matter more.

It’s also where renewables can work in parallel with the wider upgrade. Solar PV, for example, often aligns well with periods of higher daytime demand, particularly when buildings are working harder to stay comfortable. In the right setting, that can help reduce running costs and support a more resilient setup over time.

The best refurbishments are those that improve the building now while also preparing it for the conditions it’s more likely to face in the years ahead.

Progress in the East!

The new 1,000 sqm concrete slab is now taking shape, replacing the existing gravel yard and creating extended bus parking capacity as part of the wider electrification works at First Bus Norwich.

This stage is a good example of the wider changes these projects involve. Electrification relies on more than chargers alone – the surrounding space and infrastructure must support how the depot will operate going forward.

More updates to come as work progresses.

We’re looking to strengthen our network of plumbers and gas engineers across the South West for reactive work.

The role involves supporting a busy contract covering a wide range of call-outs across the region, so we’re keen to hear from reliable subcontractors who are comfortable working in occupied properties, respond quickly, and maintain a high standard on site.

The work is fast-moving and varied, so professionalism, clear communication and the ability to represent the contractor well with end users all matter.

These drone shots from Skewen Cricket Club give a clear view of the scale of the solar PV installation now in place.

We delivered a 54-panel system across both sides of the clubhouse, along with battery storage, to help the club make the most of the energy generated on site.

For clubs like Skewen, lower energy costs can ease real day-to-day pressure. Before the installation, rising bills had started to affect how the clubhouse was used. Now, with grid reliance reduced by 71%, more of that money can stay within the club – supporting the facilities, the players, and the wider future of the site.

What also stands out is the club’s place in the community. Set right at the heart of Skewen, surrounded by other local spaces and facilities, this is the kind of upgrade that extends beyond the building alone.

Proud to have delivered it alongside Cricket Wales, helping turn funding into something practical, lasting, and genuinely useful.

The commercial case for sustainable upgrades is getting ever stronger – but that doesn’t necessarily make the decisions easier.

A few years ago, these conversations were often framed quite narrowly. Carbon targets, future aspirations, doing the right thing. Those things still matter, but the discussion is broader now.

Energy costs, asset lifespan, maintenance pressure, resilience, building performance, tenant expectations, reporting requirements – they all sit in the same conversation. In many cases, the case for upgrading is clearer than it used to be.

The difficult part is usually deciding what to do first.

For most businesses, there isn’t one obvious answer. Buildings are all at different stages. Some sites need immediate attention – others can be phased. Budgets are real, operations still need to function, and not every upgrade makes sense at once.

That’s why I think the best decisions come from stepping back and looking at the whole picture. What is the building struggling with now? Which assets are nearing the end of their life? Where will investment have the biggest operational impact? What groundwork should be done now to make future improvements easier?

Sustainable upgrades are becoming more commercially compelling, but they still need careful judgement. The main objective should be to make the right decisions in the right order, with a clear view of how the building needs to perform over time.

And we’re off!

Work is officially underway at First Bus Norwich, with another depot electrification project now live on site.

The scheme includes four 400kWh DC chargers, 12 drop-down chargers, a new low-voltage panel, two gantries, and around 1,000 sqm of new concrete slab to replace the existing gravel yard and create additional parking capacity.

As with any depot electrification project, the chargers are only one part of the story. The surrounding infrastructure, layout, and day-to-day flow of the site matter just as much as the depot working properly once the new systems are in place.

A first for the UK, delivered in Bristol.

At Graphic Packaging International's new warehouse, we installed the first UK system to use Powrmatic Limited's nighttime heat harvesting technology – designed to recirculate naturally warmed air after hours and help maintain internal temperatures with less wasted energy.

The wider project involved the full design and installation of a bespoke warm air heating system tailored to the demands of a large, operational warehouse. Working with Powrmatic, we delivered a low-velocity setup with 680kW burners, full mechanical and electrical integration, new gas main routing around existing services, and an air barrier above the main warehouse door to help reduce heat loss during vehicle movement.

A great example of how the right heating strategy can do more than meet demand. It can also improve efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance the building's long-term performance.
