A story we're incredibly proud to share 👏

Meet Millie. One of our social value candidates, who's been building the start of her career with our team on-site at the New Velindre Cancer Service Centre in Cardiff 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Millie's route into construction wasn't a straight line. She found school difficult, but a growing interest in Bricklaying set her on a completely new path. With the right support to get her application in and an opportunity to prove herself at interview, she was offered the job. Since then, she's taken on more and more, pushing past every "I'm not sure I can do that" moment along the way.

Her college recently captured her journey on film, shot on-site at Velindre, and it's a brilliant reminder of what can happen when someone is simply given the chance to show what they're capable of.

In her own words: "You've just got to keep pushing past it." 💪

We're proud to be delivering on the New Velindre Cancer Centre for clients, UK & Ireland and are grateful to ACT Training for their support of young people into work through the Young Person's Guarantee.

A warm welcome to Ruby, who's joined us for work experience at the new Velindre Cancer Service Centre for clients, SACYR UK & IRELAND 👋

Ruby was inducted by our Health & Safety Manager, Jamie Davies, before being shown around the site and offices by the team. With an interest in photography and media, she may even look to get some hands-on experience capturing content for our joint media posts over the next few weeks.

So keep an eye out; you might see some of Ruby's own photos from the project appearing in future 📸

We have some very sad news to share. Geraint "Gaz" Liddon, an incredible character and a familiar face across our sites, recently passed away following a cancer diagnosis earlier this year.

Gaz worked alongside our teams for several years as a ceiling fixer and ganger. He ran his own gangs on Optimum projects, most recently at Aspire with BAM. Anyone who knew him will remember his humour and kindness on site, as well as the way he looked after his lads and his loved ones.

Even after his diagnosis, he spent his energy on other people. He walked every day for a month, going further each day and raised £4,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. When he became too unwell to use his concert tickets, he sold them and gave the money to 4Dewi Mental Health.

A fundraiser is open to support his wife Kirsty and their two daughters, which will stay open until after the funeral. Anything you can donate would help immensely.

Safety first, always 🦺

Our Project Manager, Richard Bond recently led a health and safety briefing at the New Velindre Cancer Service site for clients SACYR, getting the team together to reinforce the standards that keep everyone safe on one of our biggest Welsh projects.

It's a great example of how we keep health and safety front and centre at Optimum, led from the top and carried out by the whole team, every single day 💪
