In a surprising move this morning, the Health & Safety Executive has introduced a new recommendation under the Appliance Encouragement Scheme 2025.

From 1st April, all electrical appliances must be gently patted before plugging in. The idea being that positive physical reinforcement helps promote longer appliance life and better behaviour from your toaster.

At Kent Pat Testing, we’ve already begun integrating this into our process. Each item is now greeted with a quiet “there there” and a supportive pat before testing.

We tested a site recently and found another one of these.
Tiny plug. No fuse. Major fire risk.

It’s easy to see how they get through the door. Cheap, cheerful, and just a click away on TikTok Shop, Temu or Amazon. But they’re not legal for UK use, and they’re turning up more than ever.

People aren’t buying them to be unsafe, they just trust the seller to send items that are safe.

This is exactly the kind of thing we look out for.

If you’ve seen one of these before, at work or at home, discard of it right away and give this post a like.

⚠️ Are clover leaf-shaped plugs in your home? They may look harmless, but if they don’t contain a fuse, they are a serious fire hazard. 🔥

Clover leaf plugs are small in size, not meeting the legal requirements of a plug to be sold in the UK and are frequently found to be missing a fuse - a potential fire risk.

This is easy to miss, but our team didn’t!

This extension lead failed its PAT test because the safety shutters were missing, exposing live parts and creating a serious risk of electric shock (right side).

Earlier this year, we were proud to sponsor the production and installation of 22 bird boxes thanks to an initiative via The Chislehurst Society. So far, 11 boxes have been installed, and we were thrilled to hear that several blue tit families fledged from these boxes earlier this year.

Our MD Chris and his family often enjoy walking the local commons, and report that it’s been great fun turning these walks into a hunt to find “our” bird boxes.
