In South Wales, managing horse paddocks requires a heightened focus on drainage and poaching prevention due to high rainfall and often heavy clay soils.

Our 2026 paddock management strategy emphasises protecting ground integrity during extended wet periods.

Focus: Damage Mitigation & Drainage
In winter - Dec, Jan, Feb

• Prevent Poaching: Restrict turnout on waterlogged ground to prevent deep mud.
• Use "sacrifice areas" (hardstanding, mats or sand pens) to protect the main pasture.
• Clear perimeter ditches of debris to ensure water flow.
• Identify the driest field for winter turnout. Clear falling leaves, especially sycamore and oak, which are toxic and can clog drainage.

Critical "Wet Climate" Strategies
Gateway Management: Gateways are the first to fail in South Wales.
• Install permeable Heavy-Duty Ground Grids or a layer of hardcore/gravel over filter fabric to maintain a solid footing.
• Forage Placement: Move hay feeders daily or place them on hardstanding.
• Feeding hay on wet mud causes it to rot into the soil, worsening the "slop".

Grass Selection: Choose mixtures designed for clay soils. Species like Timothy, Meadow Fescue, and Creeping Red Fescue create a denser, more hard-wearing sward that resists treading.

Health Vigilance: Daily inspections are vital for "mud fever" (pastern dermatitis) and foot abscesses common in damp South Wales winters.

Safety is paramount. Check friends & family who may be vulnerable. Make sure livestock and pets are secure and safe.

What we offer:

Gardens, paddocks, tracks, wildflower hedge walls, ponds, lakes, ragwort eradication and grassland that might need maintaining.

Micro maintenance solutions. This usually entails one of our friendly staff and their spade and maybe, one of our compact tractors or mowers for the smaller and lighter projects.

Chainsawing with operator.

Fencing & repairs including gateways, installation of stiles, gates and footpaths. We use local materials where possible and work with local companies supplying sustainable coppiced fencing and Stakes, and strainers. We can also lay hard surfaces around your gateway to reduce poaching by hoves and machinery.

Harrowing, reseeding and rolling provides excellent grazing for happy, healthy animals. Well maintained grazing promotes good health and condition of your horses, livestock & other farmyard animals.

All our services are guided by the NAAC (National Association of Agricultural Contractors) focusing on professionalism, safety, environmental protection, emphasising proper training, equipment maintenance, accurate record-keeping, risk assessment (especially for safety & pollution) and adherence to legal requirements.

❄️🚨 ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨❄️

This is your reminder to go and check your horses’ rugs because at least one of them is currently
• half off
• twisted
• inside out
• or being proudly worn as a fashion statement

And while you’re there… throw more forage out for them.
Cold horses burn way more calories.
Empty bellies don’t stay warm rugged or unrugged.

If you think they’ve been fine all winter that’s the exact moment they’re not.

Go NOW…

Check the rug.
Feed the horse.
It’s sooooo bloody cold out there 😩🫣🤣

You’re welcome ☺️
