Change is good.

Been working on a vacant property tidy up. It was a bit overgrown so just clearing back to allow potential owners to use their imagination… or just be satisfied that it has already been cleared.

Dilly, Dilly.

Many plants main flowering has finished. This will vary from location to location & variety to variety. Many cultivars will continue producing fresh flowers whilst spent flowers remain attached.

You should choose a time, when you have mostly spent flowers, to cut them back to where the foliage is situated. This prevents falling apart, woody stems & scruffy plants.

A little tip, when traffic is vastly reduced, it means that most of the flowers are finished. They still retain some oils & plenty of fragrance if you wish to use them for potpourri.

Sloe prune.

Awkward plant to shape as its growth is irregular but I am pleased with the result. This “Blackthorn” rarely fruits as the flowers are often pruned off & it has a nice climbing rose growing through the back of it that had to be worked around. My first time shaping it.

Morning glare.

Yep, even starting early didn’t dodge the sun this morning. A bit pruning & shaping is in order whilst the is not growing & even some weeds have given up for a while…. brambles are still growing though 😔

Light.

Hard prune on this large to let more light into the house. Looks a bit harsh to start with but ideally this should be done every year to keep it on top of blocking the windows.

Also cleared dead & damaged leaves from the & weeded out the now exposed .

Cool cuts.

Still a lot of pruning to be done but trying my best to do it the early in the morning to avoid the worst of the heat.

Messy.

Where to begin in this ‘knot’ style , which has, through no fault of the owners, become messy.

I have opted to ‘knock it back’ a section at a time so that I can see what is actually there. Pruning roses by 50%, dead heading, weeding & chopping herbaceous back.

Once exposed & open the owner can decide what stays & what goes plus I’ll have space for dealing with the soil.

It’s gonna take a while this one… especially as this is not the whole garden.

In the shade.

Tough week for us this week. I have moved all of my clients to earlier slots where possible & cancelled a few.

Personal health is primary consideration if you intend to continue working to you best capacity after the heatwave has passed.

Pick tasks, like this section of this , that is in the shade. Here I removed more rouge perennial geraniums & weeds.

These borders are coming along nicely.

Subtle.
A subtle trim to widen this driveway. Actually a more dramatic change ‘in the flesh’. This will stop wind mirror scratches for a while. I also raked some gravel around to re-fill a couple of pot holes.
