What an evening for the rhp team!

To see Saltdean Lido recognised with a 2026 RIBA South East Award was a very special moment for everyone involved.

A special congratulations also goes to Derek Leaver of Saltdean Lido CIC, who received the RIBA South East Client of the Year award for his vision and dedication in driving the project forward.

Saltdean Lido has always meant more to us than just a restoration project. It is a building with huge local affection, a strong identity, and a long history at the heart of its community. Bringing it back to life called for care, patience, and a deep understanding of what made it so important in the first place.

The celebration took place at the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, another one of our restoration projects. Seeing the building still thriving ten years on, and hosting an evening that also celebrated Saltdean Lido, felt especially significant for our team.

A proud evening all round, and a lovely reminder of the value of restoring important places so they can continue to serve their communities long into the future.

Heading to 2026 this May.

It’s a great few days for conversations, ideas, and reconnecting with people across the built environment. We design thoughtful, sustainable buildings across a range of sectors, including mixed-use, regeneration, conservation and Passivhaus projects. We cover all RIBA stages, from early ideas through to delivery on site.

Tom Foggin, Phillip Naylor & Nic Hoar will be there throughout the event, so if you’re attending and fancy a chat (or a cup of tea), it would be great to catch up.

Saltdean Lido has been shortlisted for the RIBA South East Award 2026 in the Heritage category.

To be among such a prestigious shortlist is something we’re incredibly proud of. The team have been fortunate to receive several awards for Saltdean Lido, it’s always encouraging to see community-led conservation projects continue to resonate with judging panels.

Saltdean Lido’s revival has been over 14 years in the making, driven by an extraordinary community campaign determined to save a 1930s icon of Streamline Modernity from demolition. What now stands is not just a restored Grade II* listed building, but a thriving, year-round community hub.

We look forward to welcoming the judges in the coming month.

We are delighted to announce that Saltdean Lido won the AJ Heritage Award at the awards ceremony in London. It’s great to be recognised for our team’s work and to be part of a platform that celebrates excellence within the architectural industry.

The judges said the project “demonstrates the power of heritage to regenerate - and be valued by - the community.” They praised the level of “heart” and commitment shown by the client and design team, and the strong community buy-in throughout the 14-year campaign.

They highlighted the prioritisation of local companies and suppliers, the retention of as much of the original fabric as possible, and the use of advanced repair techniques. The judges welcomed the community-led revival of an important heritage asset, describing it as “what a public building should be.”

A huge thanks to all involved, including Saltdean Lido CIC, CTC - Cotton Thompson Cole, QED Structures, MCA Consulting Engineers Ltd, Stephen Cheesman, Southdowns Safety, Lewis & Co Planning Consultants, Sweco, and Buxton Building Contractors Limited for their brilliant teamwork and dedication throughout the project. It was a true team effort and we’re proud of the continued success of the project.

This morning our studios hosted our annual Macmillan Coffee Morning. It’s a chance to bring in cakes, share a cuppa, have a chat and donate to a brilliant cause. 💚

The rhp team had the pleasure of a sunny CPD visit to The Stonemasonry Company Limited last week. It was fantastic to see such a wide variety of stone types, from local quarries to beautiful French limestones, and learn about the innovative ways they can be used.

A big thank you to Pierre Bidaud for such an insightful tour. We were especially inspired by the company’s commitment to sustainability, from reusing stone that might otherwise be crushed, to finding low-carbon solutions that give new life to materials.

We loved their “wonky veg” approach to stone, embracing pieces with natural defects that others overlook, as well as the use of “spolia” (reclaimed stone from demolished or existing structures for a new lease of life).

It was a real treat for the team and a brilliant reminder of the value in rethinking how we use natural materials.

Cambridge’s Gonville & Caius College Marks Decarbonisation Milestone

On Sunday night, Cambridge’s historic Gonville & Caius College reached a major milestone in its ambitious £10 million decarbonisation project as a giant crane lifted three large Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) onto the roof. The operation marks a crucial step in the College’s plan to eliminate fossil fuel heating from its Old Courts site. The three ASHP units weigh approximately 20 tonnes. Two large units (each with an operating weight of around 7,000kg) and a third smaller unit was carefully hoisted into place on top of the College’s Murray Easton Building, a Grade II listed structure overlooking Cambridge’s Market Square.

The complex scheme, one of the most extensive decarbonisation projects undertaken by any Cambridge college to date, is supported by the UK Government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (Phase 3c) via a grant administered by Salix Finance. The overall project is scheduled for completion by summer 2026.

Saltdean Lido’s journey continues to be recognised for the team’s achievements. We have already celebrated multiple awards, and we’re delighted to share that we’ve been shortlisted once again in the Heritage Project category for the AJ Architectural Awards 2025. It’s great to be recognised for our team’s work and to be part of a platform that celebrates excellence within the architectural industry.

Our focus has been to honour the Lido’s heritage while making it welcoming and useful for today and tomorrow.

Liz Pollard, Heritage at Risk Projects Officer at Historic England said:

“The restoration and reopening of Saltdean Lido is a huge achievement, and one Historic England is proud to have played our part in. The community-driven transformation over the last few years, backed by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Brighton & Hove City Council, has given the Lido a new lease of life. Historic England provided support throughout the project via grant aid, specialist advice on difficult concrete repairs and problem solving to help drive the restoration forward. The Lido is now a hive of activity and this much cherished building can safely be removed from the Heritage at Risk Register.”

In the next stage the judging panel will be visiting Saltdean Lido – maybe even for a swim – to help them decide the winner.

We are looking forward to the awards night on Thursday 27 November at the Royal Lancaster London Hotel and to meeting everyone else shortlisted. Good luck to everyone!

A few of our team swapped desks for a game of rounders at a CFCI NextGen event. Turns out… some colleagues have been secretly hiding serious bat-and-ball skills!

The competitive streak was strong, we saw a bloody knee, some incredible sprints and plenty of laughs. But most importantly, there were new friendships made, which is exactly why we love being part of the CFCI community. Of course, the evening ended in the most traditional way possible…at the pub.

Next stop: the next CFCI event at Homerton College. This time we’ll be trading sports kit for black tie.

And yes, here’s the photo evidence that we did actually play rounders (and not just spend the evening at the pub).
