I received a couple of very thoughtful gifts today, as part of our Secret Santa at work, and as a thoughtful gesture. One links to my love of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement. The other is a nod towards Three Peas Gardening: three Christmas peas in a pod, representing Mama Pea, Papa Pea, and Petit Pois.

I'm feeling very touched by people's thoughtfulness!

Merry Christmas from Three Peas Gardening. 🎄🎅

Perhaps not the most conventional wreath for this time of year, but I enjoyed making it nonetheless! I bought the natural woven wreath frame and ribbon, but all of the seedheads and cuttings are from our garden.

On the plus side, I think Petit Pois is growing to hate courgette a little less with each one, and he certainly enjoyed the courgette chocolate cake that I baked this week!

As for the homegrown tomatoes, they really are a totally different fruit to those you buy in the supermarket. They are so much sweeter and richer from the garden. Well worth the effort.

The Zinnia flowers are currently looking splendid in the garden. Isn't this one fantastic?

Petit Pois was inspired to make his own bouquet this evening. It was really fun to see him enjoying the flowers growing in the garden. I taught him how and where to cut the different plants to help them keep flowering through the summer. His bouquet has now taken pride of place on our coffee table in the middle of our living room. It smells and looks very cheery!

As part of my apprenticeship to obtain my Level 2 qualification in Horticulture, my peers and I spent a fantastic morning at the Department of Plant Sciences (DoPS, University of Cambridge) last week. We were investigating different flower forms under the microscopes, and I attempted to get some photos...

It was fun to select flowers from the garden, put together a beautiful posy, and then dissect the flowers to view them in the lab! It took me back to my undergraduate days of studying biology.

A big "thank you" to our tutor (Linda) and DoPS staff (Barbara) for organising the session.

I'm very excited to see fresh fruit and vegetables growing in our garden.

Photo 1: I've already eaten a couple of ripe strawberries, but I'm looking forward to many more.

Photo 2: I've grown my first ever home-grown pumpkin; let's hope it makes it all the way through to the Autumn in one piece and undamaged!

Photo 3: A couple of the courgettes are almost ready to pick; there are many more on the way. I can't wait! It's a shame that Petit Pois is not a huge fan of them...I see a lot of 'courgetti' in our future!

The runner beans are also flowering, and the tomato plants are budding. I'm full of hope!

I adore these foxgloves (Digitalis)! Some are self-sown, and some have come from seed that I sowed last year. The variation across them all is beautiful to see. The first foxglove looks very much like the ones I bought a couple of years ago, so it's likely to be one of the ones I grew from seed. The others must be from lucky cross-pollination events within my own seed batch, or self-seeded from specimens in nearby gardens.

I never noticed before that the "tongue" of the flower could be more pointed and/or curve upwards in some specimens! (The fourth photo shows this clearly.) I wonder if this makes a difference to the pollinators...?

The roses are opening! I think they really appreciated the thick mulch of good quality compost in the Autumn. They are looking so happy.
