For a nice beech privacy hedge a couple of shape ups each year stop it getting too tall or thick. I came through with the Stihl kombi with the long hedgetrimmer attachment which makes light work of the beech. It’s key to go over any rough cuts with a set of loppers to make sure every cut is clean and at a 45 degree angle. I also make sure to rake out any clippings which may get caught up in the hedge, and detail underneath so that the under planted hellebores get enough light. Finally blowing away any tiny bits of debris back under the hedge leaves the lawn spotless. Bag the clippings up and take them away, another professional finish achieved and happy client.

I inherited this bumpy hedge, and and honestly I live cutting it ?👇
It’s got some ups and downs, but I am keeping the character! Instead of hacking it back into a strict, boring box, we’re preserving this classic semi-circular shape.
But a curved, uneven hedge takes a specific technique to maintain. Here’s the strategy:
1. The Semi-Circle Sweep: We use sweeping upward strokes to keep the dome shape. This isn’t just for looks the curve stops heavy rain from pooling on top, preventing the hedge from splitting and falling over.
2. The Sunlight Bonus: That rounded edge ensures sunlight hits every single level, keeping the whole thing lush and green from top to bottom.

Trimming hedges is an art, and no matter your preference we’ve got it covered.
Today’s hedge is sweet box (Sarcococca confusa)
It prefers partial or full shade, and produces fragrant white flowers and berries. Native to the Himalayas and East Asia it thrives in British gardens.
