🔌 Another rewire completed in Wenvoe, CF5!
Here's a look at the three stages towards the end of a full rewire we recently completed for a happy customer in Wenvoe.
First, all new cables were carefully routed down through the ceiling and into a purpose-built boxing — keeping everything protected, neat, and future-proof. Next, the new consumer unit was mounted and positioned ready for connection. Finally, everything was tested, wired up cleanly and professionally, with every circuit terminated and labelled.
The end result? A fully updated electrical installation that's safe, compliant, and built to last. 👌

🔌 Is your new home hiding a 50-year-old electrical system?
This photo was sent in by one of our customers after they bought their house. What you're looking at is an old rewireable fuse board from the late 1970s sitting alongside a newer plastic consumer unit that was bolted on at some point to run a shower or outbuilding — a classic patchwork job that's incredibly common in older UK homes.
Here's the thing most buyers don't realise: once you complete on a property, the electrics are your problem. No mortgage lender breathing down your neck? No compulsory survey? You might not know what you've got until you open the cupboard door.
Old rewireable boards have no RCD protection — that's the device that disconnects a circuit fast enough to prevent a serious electric shock. The wiring behind the walls is approaching 50 years old and wasn't designed for modern electrical loads. And it won't flag itself as dangerous until something goes wrong.
✅ If you've bought an older property, or you're thinking about it, the first step is an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report). It tells you exactly what you've got and what needs doing.
We carry out EICRs, consumer unit upgrades, and full rewires across Cardiff & The Vale of Glamorgan. NICEIC registered. No scare tactics — just honest advice.

⚡ Ever tried to swap a socket yourself and hit a snag?

A customer recently called us at Gabe Electrical after running into exactly this — they went to replace their socket and found the wires had been cut too short to reach the terminals properly.

This is something we see from time to time. When a socket is originally wired, sometimes the electrician cuts the cables just long enough to reach the terminals on that specific socket — rather than leaving a bit of extra length. Fast forward to a replacement socket where the live and neutral terminals are in slightly different positions, and suddenly those short wires just won't reach.

The fix? We extended the cables safely so everything could be connected properly, giving the customer a reliable, safe installation.

✅ If you've pulled a socket off the wall and been left scratching your head — give us a call before doing anything else. It's always better to be safe!

🔌 Is your fuse box tripping again? There might be a reason — and it's worth getting checked. Electrical faults don't always announce themselves loudly. Sometimes it's a socket that's gone dead, a light that keeps flickering, or a faint smell of burning you can't quite place. These are the things our team at Gabe Electrical investigates every single week across Cardiff. We've just published a handy guide covering: 👉 Common signs of an electrical fault 👉 What our fault finding process looks like 👉 How much it costs 👉 Why it matters to get it right first time Whether you've got something playing up right now or you just want to know what to look out for, it's a useful read 👇 https://gabeelectrical.co.uk/electrical-fault-finding-cardiff/ And if you need us out, just give us a call — we cover Cardiff, Penarth, Dinas Powys and the surrounding areas. NICEIC approved and 5-star rated ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

⚡ Lost power at home? RCD keep tripping? Here's what to check first…
Electrical problems have a habit of happening at the worst possible times — late at night, a Sunday afternoon, or just as you're in the middle of cooking tea. Before you panic, there are a few things worth checking yourself.
🔌 If your RCD keeps tripping, it usually means something on that circuit is causing a fault — often a faulty appliance. Try unplugging everything on the affected circuit, reset the RCD, then plug items back in one at a time to find the culprit. We've put together a full guide on this over on the website.
💡 If you've lost all power, first check whether it's a wider power cut in your street (a quick look outside usually tells you!), then check your fuse board to see if the main switch has tripped. Again, we've written a step-by-step power cut guide to help you work through it calmly.
Sometimes though, the fault won't reset — or it keeps coming back. That's when it's time to call in a professional rather than keep trying to force it.
That's exactly why we've launched our Emergency Electrician Cardiff service — for those moments when you genuinely need someone fast, day or night. Whether it's a persistent fault, burning smell, or a complete loss of power you just can't get to the bottom of, the Gabe team are here.

How much does an EICR cost in Cardiff?

It is one of the questions we hear most often — and the answer is not always as simple as a fixed price.

The cost of an EICR can vary depending on:

* The size of the property
* The number of circuits
* The age and condition of the installation
* Access to all areas
* Whether any remedial works are needed afterwards

That is why the cheapest quote is not always the best value. A proper EICR should involve careful inspection, accurate testing, and clear reporting, so you understand exactly what has been found and what happens next.

In our latest blog post, we break down what affects EICR pricing in Cardiff, what is usually included, and how landlords, homeowners, and businesses can get a more accurate quote.

We were recently asked to price up some electrical work in Cardiff following an EICR that had been done by another electrician.

When we looked at the report, the first thing we noticed was the time on site: under one hour.

A proper domestic EICR — one that actually checks what it's supposed to check — takes anywhere from two to four hours. In under an hour, you can walk around, tick some boxes, and write up a certificate. What you can't do is test everything properly.

Main bonding is a perfect example of what gets missed.

Main bonding is the connection between your gas and water pipework and the earth in your consumer unit. Its job is to provide a safe path for electrical current in the event of a fault — the kind of fault that could otherwise make a tap or a radiator live.

The only way to actually verify it's working is to remove both ends of the conductor and test its resistance with a multifunction tester. That takes time, and it means temporarily disconnecting things. So it gets skipped.

A visual check — glancing at the cable and confirming it's connected at both ends — tells you almost nothing. Corroded clamps, damaged conductors hidden inside the insulation, poor terminations — none of these show up visually. All of them show up on a proper resistance test.

This is one example. There are plenty of others: RCD testing, insulation resistance, continuity of protective conductors. All of these require disconnection, testing equipment, and time. All of them get skipped when someone is trying to get in and out in under an hour.

We don't say this to scare anyone. Most homes are fine. But if you have an EICR certificate and you're not sure what went into it, it's worth asking.

We're always happy to have a look — or to carry out a full inspection if you want one you can actually rely on. 🏠
