Meet the Team - John
1. What inspired you to start Tarling Fencing Limited?
For me, it started with my background and upbringing. My dad ran his own business, so I grew up around that mindset—working hard, doing things properly, and taking pride in what you do.
I wanted to build something of my own where quality actually means something. Not just putting fences up, but delivering a service people can rely on—clear communication, high standards, and a job done right first time.
Tarling Fencing was built on that idea: doing things properly, every time.
2. What does a typical day look like for you?
There isn’t really a “typical” day—and that’s what I enjoy.
Most days start early, whether that’s training or getting organised before work. From there it’s a mix of site visits, quoting, planning upcoming jobs, and staying in touch with the team throughout the day.
I’m still very hands-on in the business. I’m involved in the detail—making sure jobs are set up right, standards are met, and everything runs smoothly from enquiry through to completion.
It’s not just sitting behind a desk—you’re constantly moving, solving problems, and making sure things are done properly.
3. What do you enjoy most about your work?
The biggest thing for me is seeing the end result.
Taking something that’s tired, broken, or not fit for purpose and turning it into something solid, clean, and built to last—that’s where the satisfaction comes from.
I also take a lot of pride in customer feedback. When someone recognises the quality, the communication, and the effort—that’s what it’s about.
And as the business grows, seeing the team develop and take pride in their work as well—that’s just as important to me.
