Here's a common problem. Metal switch, metal box, no CPC. In houses of this age it was common to take a live feed from the downstairs light circuit and use it for the landing light. The return would be the upstairs circuit via its neutral. It is known as a shared neutral. Unfortunately, in this case, the live taken from downstairs is not a cable with a cpc in it, so this arrangement of metal fittings is not earthed. The solution here is to use a plastic switch and nylon screws to remove any chance of coming in to contact with a potentially live plate/box in the event of a fault. This was discovered on EICR with a simple R2 test using a wander lead.

Consumer unit under stairs replaced after thermal damage discovered on EICR. There is a lot of importance in carrying out regular inspection. If a fire had occurred, it had the potential to burn out the stairs leaving any occupants on the first floor with less means of escaping.
