Primroses are our Wildlife Wonder Plant of the Month for March! Providing a boost for wildlife in the early months of spring, here's everything you need to know about them:

🌸 An essential early spring nectar source, they bloom very early - sometimes as early as December in mild years. The early-flowering supports brimstone and small tortoiseshell butterflies as well as bee flies (a fluffy fly with a long proboscis for long tubed flowers).

🌸 They're the larval food plant of the Duke of Burgundy butterfly, while their seeds are removed and dispersed by ants and small mammals.

🌸 Part of the Primulaceae family, they're excellent in woodlands and hedgerow habits. They’ve also been recognised as an ancient woodland indicator in the UK, meaning they’ve been in wooded areas for centuries.

🌸 Their name originates from Medieval Latin “prima rosa”, meaning “first rose”, reflecting early flowering, while in folklore they're linked with fairies, youth and protection.

🌸 They'll grow in sun or light shade as well as most soils, providing they aren't too wet or dry. However, they don't like a very limey (alkaline) soil or soil that’s prone to drying out. You can improve the soil with organic matter, but they won't flower in deep shade.
