Before installing an EV charger at any property, we will carry out the necessary checks to confirm that the existing electrical supply is suitable and safe for the proposed installation.
A typical 7.4kW domestic EV charger can draw approximately 32A continuously for 4–8 hours, which represents a significant additional load, particularly where the property already has other high-demand electrical appliances.
Before installing an EV charger, we would normally establish:
- Whether the property has a looped supply.
- The existing service cable size and rating.
- The rating of the DNO cut-out/service fuse.
- Whether the neighbouring property is also connected.
- The proposed EV charger's maximum current demand.
- Whether load management is required or recommended.
- Whether the DNO needs to be notified or consulted.
- Whether the existing electrical supply can safely accommodate the additional demand.
A looped supply is where the electrical supply to two properties is connected through the same DNO service arrangement. This can require additional consideration before installing a high-demand appliance such as an EV charger.
If the existing supply is not suitable, the DNO may need to carry out an upgrade before the EV charger can be installed.

We have also included the confirmation letter from the DNO confirming that the supply had been upgraded and the property was subsequently suitable for an EV charger installation.
