ANNUAL DRUID LECTURE AT AVEBURY
This is taking place on Tuesday 24 September at 11am – 1pm, at the old Chapel opposite the Red Lion.
Founded in 2023 by the Druids Order of Avebury, this Annual Druid lecture takes place each year around the time of the Autumn equinox.
It is a chance for everyone who loves Avebury and appreciates the Druid work that has been going on there for millennia, to come along and learn in more depth about its ancient heritage and future potential as a haven of peace, wisdom and light.
This year Dr Thomas Daffern will be talking about his vision of peacemaking in the wider world, and reporting back on his studies in the history of Druidry in Europe, from his base at the heart of Gaul.
Why does Druidry still matter? What does it have to say of relevance to today’s complex geo-political conflicts and a world swirling with half-truths, cyber-warfare, disinformation, and malignant attacks from hard right fascists across the world against multiculturalism, democracy, peace and tolerance.
What position should Druids occupy today in our complex geo-political landscape? Should they be really be racist populists cheering on Farage, Trump, Putin and the Proud Boys, or were Druids actually respected spiritual elders, who upheld truth, non-violence, peace, amity and friendship, who travelled the length and breadth of the Celtic world seeking to build lasting peace, love and beauty and to shine some hint of supernatural enlightenment into people’s lives? And what about attitudes to other religions, to Christianity for instance, or Islam, should Druids oppose other faiths or work for interfaith harmony and peace? And what about global warming and ecological issues? Are they more important than peace or vice versa? How about feminism and socialism? What about Brexit and Ireland? Should Druids care about these issues too?
Given the complexity of these deep issues, after an introductory talk by Thomas we shall hold a guided discussion on these matters using talking stick rules. Anyone interested in the past, present and future of Druidry at Avebury and beyond is welcome to attend.
Dr. Thomas Daffern has served as Peace Officer to the Council of Druid Orders since 1998 and first came to Avebury in 1975. He taught Philosophy and Religious Studies nearby at St Marys, Calne in 2007-2008.

Happy St George's Day and Shakespeare's birthday.. Heres a poem of mine for Shakespeare:

281. FOR SHAKESPEARE'S BIRTHDAY (written April 23, 1997)

Everything
goes
missing
again
and again

lovers,
once long held,
irredeemable
as marble,

sacred
feelings
beyond articulation,
beyond hearing
within pure mind,

ideas
about
solving
the knot
of soul....

The place
where they
all end
up is
Silence.

Hard to
gain access
That kingdom.

Mind only
yogacharins
deep down sifters
amidst wells
and mines
and caves
searching
for diamonds

Awaken now gently -
see them scattered
on each leaf,
dew crystals
sunlight's glory

Some things
are stolen
forcibly taken
what error
is there here ?

The illusion of mine
and yours
departing and retrieving
into each other
we steal from each
other's eyes
their depths

brilliant sparks
amidst the black
gaining and losing
foaming in love
crazy with awe

what endless plots

cajoling, wheedling, threatening it out,

Dissolve us,

enactment of your cosmic drama

Dr Mark Gillings, Academic Director and Reader in Archaeology at the University of Leicester, said: “Our research has revealed previously unknown megaliths inside the world-famous Avebury stone circle. We have detected and mapped a series of prehistoric standing stones that were subsequently hidden and buried, along with the positions of others likely destroyed during the 17th and 18th centuries. Together, these reveal a striking and apparently unique square megalithic monument within the Avebury circles that has the potential to be one of the very earliest structures on this remarkable site.”

Archaeologists from the universities of Leicester and Southampton have found a striking and apparently unique square monument beneath the world-famous Avebury stone circle in Wiltshire.
