Unexpected visitors at the allotment this Bank Holiday weekend!

Yesterday (Saturday), two abandoned Indian Runner ducklings were discovered. Thanks to the quick thinking and kindness of our amazing allotment community, the ducklings were kept safe, fed, sheltered, and cared for while help was arranged.

After several hours of teamwork - including building a temporary enclosure and making sure the ducklings were comfortable, they were safely handed over to the London Wildlife Group, where they’ll now receive proper care.

A huge thank you to everyone who stepped in to help. From those who found them, to those who brought food, materials, and reassurance, it was a wonderful example of community spirit in action.

Each year, Ealing Council dump a couple of trucks worth of compost somewhere in the borough (London). Yesterday it was in Acton, and several plot holders from Northfields were there to help distribute and bring back to Northfields Allotment

From bare branches to blossom… and soon, the annual battle with the birds begins 🍒🌸🕊️

Our much-loved cherry tree at Northfields Allotments goes through an incredible transformation every spring. Just weeks ago it stood completely bare after winter, before bursting into beautiful blossom that fills the site with colour and signals the start of the growing season.

But as every allotment holder knows, blossom is only the beginning… because once the cherries start forming, it’s time to get the nets ready! Last year this tree produced an amazing harvest, and without protection the birds would happily enjoy most of it before we do.

It’s one of the best reminders of how quickly nature changes through the seasons - from winter dormancy, to spring blossom, to the promise of summer fruit.

Protecting a living legacy at Northfields Allotments

Our perimeter hedgerow isn’t just a boundary - it’s a vital, protected ecosystem that’s been part of this site since 1832.

Recognised by Ealing Council as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC), this ancient hedge plays a crucial role in supporting local biodiversity while shielding the allotments from the busy Northfields Avenue.

Carefully maintained by the Ealing Dean Allotment Society (EDAS), hundreds of native British trees have been planted to strengthen and restore gaps over time - including a newly replanted section where overgrowth had taken hold, now returned to traditional hawthorn hedging.

It’s home to an incredible range of wildlife - from birds and hedgehogs to protected stag beetles - and even acts as a navigation corridor for bats.

As we continue to care for this historic feature, we’re not just growing food - we’re nurturing a thriving habitat and preserving a piece of local natural heritage for future generations.

Three years, same tree, same date. Today's photo bursting with blossom, 2023 - not quite there.

Nature doesn’t run on our schedules - and that’s part of the magic of allotment life. Some years feel slow, others overflow. And sometimes, the quiet seasons are just building toward something bigger.

Last year this very tree gave us 65kg of cherries. Sixty-five! A reminder that even when things look a little behind, there’s often abundance on the way.

Patience, sunshine, and a bit of faith in the process.
