We are into our third heatwave of 2026. How do we make our outdoor spaces comfortable in the heat and at the same time cool our homes?
Here are some things you can do to plan for future heat:
In the shorter term, give yourself some shade by:
• Using a parasol or umbrella
• Install a covered pergola with solid roof or shade fabric.
• Install a shade sail (the darker the fabric the better).
• Plant fast growing, large leaved plants such as Tetrapanax papyrifa or Canna musifolia (in large pots) for shade creation.
• Add a water feature or still bowl of water (it helps!)

Longer term
• Plant a tree! But bear in mind the type of tree and distance from the foundations of your house. Min 5m from the house. Larger trees such as Oak should be further from the foundations.
• Install a pergola and grow climbers over it. If the pergola is attached to your house and you want the light inside in the Winter, a deciduous climber is best.
• Create planting beds near the ground floor windows of the house
• Train climbers up the facades of the house (especially the facades which get direct sun) making sure that the brickwork is in good repair first.
• Place window boxes on sunny external window sills and plant with tall grasses or evergreen plants (but remember to water them a lot)
• Minimise paved areas and increase the ratio of planting to paving.

A well designed garden should be able to give you somewhere comfortable to sit, even in a heatwave. Planning for this makes it a lot easier to cope with!

I was trying to capture a newly planted pot in my garden but Daisy the cat had other ideas...they say never work with children and animals 😂 difficult not to in this case.

If you muscle past the cat and the builders noise from next door there's a rather joyful combination of Digitalis x valini 'Firecracker', Digitalis alba, Polystichum polyblepharum and Dryopteris erythrosora. Orange is great with green 💚 🧡

A round up of my Seville visit. There were so many beautiful gardens and patios including the Palacio de las Dueñas, the Alcazar and various private patios that I happened to walk past. The Spanish are masters of using water and lush planting to create refuges from the heat. We may not often have that level of heat but a courtyard can still be a welcoming and special space...que precioso!

Back to visit this north facing front garden now in its 3rd year. It's filling out beautifully and looking lush and peaceful. I've chosen hardworking plants such as Epimedium x perralchicum 'Frohnleiten', Amelanchier lamarkii, Ophiopogon nigrescens and Liriope muscari 'Big Blue' all set off by a thick mulch of gravel to keep the moisture in the soil and the weeds away.

Inspiration for my gardens can come from anywhere...but this landscape is a huge influence on me. For its wildness, abundance, chaos, and infinite textures.

These snippets are from my latest visit to my childhood home - Trinidad and Tobago - specifically the northern part of Trinidad.

Now,more than ever, we need our gardens to be green sanctuaries filled with wildlife and nature...
Planting for lushness and texture are two of my aims in all my gardens - to ensure year round interest. So whilst the plants may not be quite the same, that richness is what I try to achieve.
