We’ve been carrying out some lead detailing just a stones throw away from one of Edinburgh’s most iconic landmarks, Fettes College, and couldn’t help but draw inspiration from its rich architectural symbolism.
Designed by David Bryce and completed in 1870, Fettes is a striking example of Scottish Baronial architecture, but what many don’t realise is the deeper meaning behind the towers: they were deliberately shaped to resemble beehives. The concept was to reflect the values of industry, productivity, and community, nod to the ‘busy bee’ ethos expected of its students. It’s a subtle detail, but one that speaks volumes about the intention and vision behind great architecture.
At Hallmark Roofing Edinburgh Ltd, we take pride in our city’s history and love working in areas surrounded by buildings with such heritage and meaning. So when we were asked to complete a traditional lead detail to this newly refurbished cupola nearby, we thought, what better inspiration than the hive at the end of the road?
This little dome now carries a touch of Edinburgh’s story with it, crafted with care and built to last.
